Manchester United target Denzel Dumfries “opening up” to Inter Milan’s contract offer

Manchester United target Denzel Dumfries looks set to stay at Inter Milan and sign a new contract at the Serie A champions.

The Dutchman has been linked to the Red Devils ever since Erik ten Hag became manager in 2022.

It was recently reported that Inter Milan were still keen to sell the player due to financial restrictions.

In addition, Dumfries has also confirmed that it is a dream of his to play in the Premier League and with a sizeable Dutch contingent forming at Old Trafford, United could have been a logical landing spot for the marauding wingback.

With Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s future seemingly away from United, it was also thought that this may trigger a move for the Dutch international who is currently preparing to take on England tomorrow night in the semi-finals of Euro 2024.

However, this morning La Gazzetta dello Sport in Italy report that Dumfries is now in fact likely to stay at his current club.

The outlet reports that “Denzel Dumfries is … moving towards an agreement with Inter which will be able to complete the last renewal to be signed this summer.”

Despite being away on international duty, “his entourage found time to meet the Inter managers and the subject of the discussion was the negotiation to extend the former PSV player’s contract, which expires in a year. Inter’s intention is not to start the new season with a situation that is not yet defined.”

The Dutchman has already received a proposal from Inter last winter when they offered €4 million plus bonuses, a pay rise from the €2.5 million he currently earns.

Dumfries was holding out for €5.5 million but he is said to be “opening up” to Inter’s offer and “veering towards a yes” and there is a feeling that an agreement is “in the air”.

Therefore, if United are to sell Wan-Bissaka it looks like they will have to look elsewhere for right back cover.

After Diogo Dalot’s fine season last year, it is logical to assume he will be the first choice right back. However, if the former Crystal Palace defender leaves Old Trafford, United will need to be active in the market to snap up a deputy for the Portugal defender.
