Sander Berge is the latest midfielder to appear on Manchester United’s radar amid their struggle to find an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain for Manuel Ugarte.

United have been trying to sign Ugarte since early summer, having reportedly reached an agreement over personal terms with the Uruguayan midfielder last month.

However, the Red Devils and PSG remain far apart in their valuations for the 23-year-old, as the French side intend to not make a loss on the player they signed from Sporting Lisbon for a reported fee of €60m.

According to journalist Duncan Castles, Ugarte’s entourage believe the combative midfielder is United’s first choice option and there is a hope a resolution will be found.

In his “Transfers Podcast”, Castles adds that the Premier League giants have begun looking at alternatives. Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming United are monitoring the situation of Real Sociedad star Martín Zubimendi.

Castles says that apart from the Spanish midfielder, United have also discussed Berge as an option should they fail to sign Ugarte.

It is understood that the Norway international “will certainly leave” Burnley. He only joined the side last summer but may push for a move away from Turf Moor as he has no desire to play in the Championship again.

Castles added: “It’s an interesting option. I think a different style to Ugarte, certainly a taller player, probably a more elegant player in the midfield, but very good at retaining possession, distributing possession.”

Further, it is claimed that Burnley, following their relegation from the Premier League, need to sell players to balance their books. Accordingly, they are willing to let go players like Berge, who are not very keen on playing in England’s second tier.

Berge is described as a “surprise” option for United, and is viewed as a “cheaper” alternative to Ugarte.

The journalist adds that Berge’s signing would allow the Old Trafford outfit to allocate some money to other areas, as they look to add another centre-back as well as a new right-back to their ranks this summer.

Further, it remains to be seen how PSG’s impending signing of João Neves will impact Ugarte’s future. The Benfica defensive midfielder is set to join the Ligue 1 giants in a deal worth €70m, including add-ons.
