Manchester United have joined Juventus in the race to sign Andreas Christensen from Barcelona, as per reports.

Ruben Amorim’s back three has brought little defensive stability at the Theatre of Dreams, with United having conceded 16 goals in their last seven games.

The greater share of the goals the Red Devils have conceded has come from set-pieces. Still, their centre-backs could have done a lot more to avoid giving away cheap set-pieces and guard their penalty area with more authority.

Erik ten Hag signed Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro to strengthen his backline in the summmer but the two signings have failed to have any drastic impact. Further, Amorim’s 3-4-3 formation has only heightened the need for more investment in that area.

Manchester United set their sights on Andreas Christensen

According to Mundo Deportivo, in the last few hours, United and Juventus have shown “serious” interest in signing Christensen in the January transfer window.

Christensen left Chelsea in the summer of 2022 to join Barcelona as a free agent. Under Xavi, he was one of the side’s best defenders, impressing with his physicality.

The 6ft 2in defender’s versatility and technical ability in possession also made him a key part of the Catalan giants’ lineup.

However, an ACL injury in August sidelined him and this season he has only made one appearance under Hansi Flick. Now his future at the club is uncertain.

The 28-year-old enters the final 18 months of his contract at Camp Nou in January, meaning he is unlikely to cost a lot should United and Juve make a formal approach.

Not much has been revealed about United’s plans but it is suggested the Serie A outfit may request a loan move next month.

Meanwhile, Barcelona have set their sights on Old Trafford in hopes of landing Marcus Rashford. The Englishman is expected to return in Amorim’s matchday squad against Newcastle United but his long-term future at the club remains in doubt.

The Spanish outfit are interested but his lucrative contract is seen as a huge obstacle.
