Marcus Rashford is expected to miss Manchester United’s trip to Liverpool on Sunday due to illness.

The 27-year-old has not featured in United’s last five matches, with Ruben Amorim leaving Rashford out of the squad for four of those before naming him on the bench for the defeat to Newcastle on Monday.

With the transfer window now open, there has been strong speculation over Rashford’s future at United. The forward has reportedly turned down big-money offers to move to Saudi Arabia, while PSG are also said to be monitoring the situation.

The question of whether Amorim would include Rashford in his squad for this weekend’s huge clash at Anfield has an enforced answer, with illness set to keep hm out.

"It’s the same situation," Amorim said.

"At the moment, he’s ill, he’s not training so we'll see in the future but he's like a normal player, then I make a selection so it's the same.

"I think he's going to be out this week, he's not training. We'll see but I think this week he's out."

United could be 15th in the table by the time their match with Liverpool kicks off on Sunday, and they go into it on a run of four straight defeats in all competitions.

However, Amorim has insisted his side are capable of becoming only the second team to beat Liverpool this season.

"In football, in one game, anything can happen,” Amorim said.

“If you talk about the season, every time the best win. In the moment they are better than us but we can win any game.

"We have to focus not on the context but on the performance, what we have to do is the simple things. We need to improve the simple things to play these kinds of games."
