Left-back has been a problem position for Manchester United for over a year now. The Red Devils are currently without a specialist in that position, just as they were a year ago.

Luke Shaw picked up an injury in pre-season which will keep him out until September while Tyrell Malacia is not expected to return before October.

Last season, the England international ended up missing over 30 games while the Netherlands star did not play even a single minute.

The club have signed Noussair Mazraoui, who is versatile enough to play on the opposite flank, while Diogo Dalot started there in the victory over Fulham.

LB issues persist

But the Moroccan’s poor injury record suggests INEOS should address this situation but with funds tight and a midfielder required urgently, not much money could be left to bring in a full-back.

As relayed by The Peoples Person today, the Old Trafford side will not be bringing in Ferdi Kadıoğlu, who is expected to be heading to Brighton instead.

A loan move or bringing in a free agent was the initial plan with the club getting linked with a move for former Atletico Madrid man Mario Hermoso and former Chelsea and Barcelona star Marcos Alonso.

Teamtalk have reported that a move for the Spaniard remains on while the 20-time English league champions are also looking at Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell.

However, the Blues want a permanent exit for the Englishman, while Erik ten Hag’s team can only afford a loan deal.

Alonso’s future

Alonso seems to be the logical choice given his free agent status and his experience of playing in the English top-flight and his ability to move inwards as a centre-back. However, his injury history could throw a spanner in the works.

“Sources have confirmed to TEAMtalk that former Chelsea star Alonso is also on United’s radar as he is a free agent after leaving Barcelona at the end of last season. The 33-year-old is thought to be keen on a move back to the Premier League following his time at Barcelona.

“However, Alonso also struggled with injuries last season making just eight appearances for Barcelona and his fitness issues would be a concern for United if they are to pursue a deal for the Spaniard.”

However, United will face competition from Sevilla as reported by Marca. The Spain international has been offered to the seven-time Europa League champions. He knows the club well and remains open to the possibility of playing in La Liga.

“Víctor Orta has received numerous offers in the last few hours, with Marcos Alonso being one of the best placed among the possible players for the Sevilla project.

Sevilla offer

“The full-back has rejected financially attractive offers during the summer, hoping for a project that would truly appeal to him.

“Staying in Spain and at a major club like Sevilla would be part of his plans, although to reach an agreement with the Andalusians he would have to adapt to the economic reality that the club is experiencing.”

Whether at all a left-back is brought in remains to be seen. Both Shaw and Malacia’s impending returns could mean INEOS do not address this situation.

But an injury could mean Ten Hag is forced to play Lisandro Martinez in that position, where he struggled against Manchester City in the Community Shield.
