Manchester United the priority for defender despite PSG interest

Matthijs de Ligt is prioritising a move to Manchester United this summer despite interest in the Bayern Munich defender from Paris Saint-Germain.

De Ligt is free to leave Bayern Munich after falling out of favour in Germany, where the 24-year-old started just 16 league games during a disappointing Bundesliga campaign for the club.

Manchester United have made the signing of the centre-back their focus for the transfer window with Erik ten Hag eager to reunite with a player he previously worked with at Ajax.

De Ligt is keen on a transfer to the Premier League and has given the ‘green light’ for his representatives to hold talks with the Red Devils.

United also remain in negotiations with Bayern Munich over the fee and structure of a deal understood to be worth in the region of €40m (£34m).

Fabrizio Romano is reporting that De Ligt favours a transfer to Old Trafford despite interest from long-term admirers Paris Saint-Germain, with no talks between the player’s agent and French champions as things stand.

United have turned to De Ligt after seeing a move for Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo blocked by UEFA and a bid for Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite rejected.

However, an approach for the latter could be revisited with the club interested in signing more than one central defender this summer.
