Christian Eriksen is expected to leave Manchester United come the end of the season.

Eriksen appeared to be one of the most likely departures in the summer, having lost his place in Erik ten Hag’s lineup, as the Dutch coach preferred the partnership of Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro in the middle of the park last term.

Further, Eriksen entered the final year of his contract at Old Trafford. As such, the transfer window was seen as the Red Devils’ final opportunity to make any profit on the Dane.

The 32-year-old, however, remained at United and has pushed his way back into Ten Hag’s starting lineup amid Casemiro’s worrying form and concerns over Manuel Ugarte’s fitness.

Eriksen has already featured in nine games across all competitions. More impressively, the veteran midfielder has been involved in six goals.

However, it seems the Denmark international’s form has so far not impressed the club’s hierarchy enough, as they are yet to open talks with the player over potentially extending his stay in Manchester.

Fabrizio Romano says “no contacts ongoing” between the two parties over a new deal.

The Italian transfer guru adds that it is “likely” that Eriksen leaves United as a free agent in the summer of 2025.

Starting January 1, the former Inter Milan playmaker will be free to negotiate with overseas clubs. Eriksen moved to United on a three-year deal upon the expiration of his contract at Brentford in 2022.

He started against his former club on Saturday and delivered a convincing display. In the absence of Mainoo, Eriksen shouldered the responsibility of progressing the play through the middle, creating four chances in his side’s 2-1 win.

Accordingly, despite Eriksen’s ageing legs, his exit, that too as a free agent, might not be received well by the United fanbase.

Recently, The Peoples Person relayed a report suggesting United have already been searching for a new midfielder capable of adding both physicality and technical ability to support Mainoo.
