Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez withdraws from Argentina squad with injury
Manchester United star Lisandro Martinez has withdrawn from the Argentina national team due to an injury he picked up at club level.
Martinez was included in Argentina’s 28-man squad by Lionel Scaloni for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay and Peru.
However, according to the reliable Gaston Edul, the defender will not be available to Scaloni for selection.
Edul wrote on X, “Lisandro Martínez is out of the Argentine national team.”
“He is out of action due to a knock he suffered at Manchester United.”
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano adds that United will assess Martinez in the coming days to find out the severity of the issue.
Martinez started United’s 3-0 win over Leicester City on Sunday. He featured for all 90 minutes despite needing treatment from medical staff in the second half.
News of his withdrawal will undoubtedly leave the club and the fans sweating. However, the fact that he completed the match vs. Leicester suggests his injury is not too serious.
Since his arrival at Old Trafford from Ajax in 2022, Martinez has missed a total of 56 matches. Last season especially, he struggled with his fitness, managing a mere 11 Premier League appearances.
Hopefully, it’s nothing serious and Martinez is available for Ruben Amorim’s first match as United head coach on November 24 against Kieran McKenna’s Ipswich Town.
Amorim arrived at United on Monday afternoon to officially take over the reins from departed interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Like most of his teammates, Martinez will not want to miss the first days of Amorim’s tenure as it would deny him the chance to make an early impression on the Portuguese coach.
