Manchester United were let down badly by their big-name stars in midfield with Casemiro’s drop-off in form a major concern for Erik ten Hag for the entire duration of the 2023/24 season.

The Brazilian struggled to adapt to the Dutchman’s new high-transition style, often seen struggling to track back and cover the space left by his advancing midfield partners.

His advancing years and injuries have slowed him and if the manager decides to stick to his guns regarding the gameplay this term as well, the former Real Madrid superstar’s stay in Manchester could be cut short.

The defensive midfielder has reportedly made amends with the former Ajax coach but INEOS want to move him on due to his enormous wages and the possibility of generating a decent fee with plenty of interest from cash-rich Saudi clubs.

Midfield additions needed

Ten Hag would prefer to keep Sofyan Amrabat, who stole the show during the FA Cup final but he did struggle for the remainder of the season.

The Peoples Person has relayed reports stating the Red Devils have been eyeing a cut-price fee for the Moroccan but whether Fiorentina accept remains to be seen.

The new co-owners have also identified Manuel Ugarte of Paris Saint-Germain as a viable alternative with the 20-time English league champions even lodging a €45 million bid for the Uruguayan.

The defensive midfield general has been on fire during the ongoing Copa America and is attracting plenty of interest from all across Europe and it will be a difficult deal to get over the line.

But The Athletic have claimed that with so many positions to strengthen throughout the squad and considering budgetary restrictions, the Old Trafford side could once again be forced to rely on loan signings to improve their midfield.

Loan signings again

“As well as up front and at centre-back, United would ideally like to strengthen in central midfield and are considering Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte, but loan options are also being seriously contemplated.”

Last term, it was the Fiorentina star who arrived in Manchester on deadline day. It remains to be seen who arrives this window. It has been reported that the English giants have a meagre budget after years of poor decisions in the market.

In a bid to acquire all their intended targets, the club will need sell multiple players in order to raise enough capital. Therefore, plenty of planned deals might not work out if United cannot offload their high-earning stars.

The Red Devils are close to sealing the signing of Joshua Zirkzee while they have agreed on personal terms with Matthijs de Ligt. The club require more than one centre-back with attempts to recruit Jarrad Branthwaite ongoing.
