Manchester United’s summer move for Matthijs de Ligt is inching ever closer with The Manchester Evening News claiming that the Red Devils have verbally agreed personal terms with the centre-back.

United’s need for defensive reinforcements is well known after what had transpired last season and the report has claimed that progress is being made in a bid to reunite Erik ten Hag with his former Ajax protege.

The Netherlands international, currently away on international duty at the Euros, is reportedly open to joining the 20-time English league champions.

United are yet to agree a deal with Bayern Munich for their defender but there is cautious optimism building that a deal can be agreed for a lesser fee than was originally anticipated.

De Ligt personal terms agreed

“Manchester United have verbally agreed personal terms with Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt.

“Bayern want £42 million for the 24-year-old and United are optimistic of concluding a deal for Netherlands international De Ligt.”

“United have an existing relationship with De Ligt’s agent, Rafaela Pimenta, who was hosted at the club’s training complex over the last year.”

United are eyeing more than once centre-back this window with Raphael Varane already departing while both Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire have been linked with exits.

De Ligt has been a long-term target for the 20-time English league champions, in fact, since his breakthrough into the Ajax senior side.

Former Ajax players keep increasing

However, a deal never materialised with the Netherlands international choosing to leave Amsterdam for Turin before joining up with Bayern.

Vincent Kompany is reportedly open to moving on the 24-year-old, who did not enjoy the best of times in Germany since his €67 million move back in 2022.

If De Ligt joins, he will become the fifth former Ajax star to join the English giants since Ten Hag took charge.

While INEOS had decided to move away from Ten Hag’s policy of signing Eredivisie talents, that does not seem to be the case as of now. The centre-back’s compatriot Joshua Zirkzee is also close to sealing a move to the Manchester giants.
