Pep Guardiola and his Manchester City players have established themselves as the leading club in UEFA’s updated club coefficient rankings.

The holding of top spot in the first 2024/25 rankings comes after a UEFA Champions league quarter-final exit at the hands of Real Madrid in last season’s premier club competition in Europe, in City’s first campaign defending the European crown.

Manchester City claimed the Champions League title for the first time in June 2023, defeating Italian giants Inter at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul courtesy of a single second-half goal from Rodrigo.

Despite a failure to retain the Champions League title last campaign, there was plenty of European and global success for Pep Guardiola’s players last season, claiming the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup in August and December respectively.

As updated and announced by UEFA on Friday, Manchester City are now the top club in the coefficient rankings ahead of the brand new 2024/25 season, leading reigning Champions League holders Real Madrid.

Top-10 clubs in UEFA’s updated club coefficient rankings

1 – Manchester City
2 – Real Madrid
3 – Bayern Munich

4 – Liverpool
5 – AS Roma
6 – Paris Saint-Germain
7 – Villarreal

8 – Borussia Dortmund
9 – Chelsea
10 – Inter

The UEFA rankings look at performances of teams over the past four seasons ahead of the new campaign, with City not only winning the Champions League in 2022/23, but also reaching the semi-finals in the previous season, and making the final in 2021.

Manchester City’s outing in next season’s Champions League will be the club’s appearance in the competition for a 14th consecutive season, as the tournament also takes on a new 32-team format with eight matches against different opponents replacing the group stage.

Pep Guardiola and his Manchester City players will find out their opponents when the league stage draw for the 2024/25 Champions League is made on 29 August 2024.
