Manchester City open to price reduction on €50 million goalkeeper as Ederson uncertainty intensifies

Premier League champions Manchester City are reportedly open to the idea of a reduced price when it comes to a potential sale of Ederson to Saudi Arabia.

The Brazilian international is becoming increasingly linked to the idea of a permanent switch away from the Etihad Stadium having played an integral role during the club’s most successful ever period.

Originally joining Manchester City during the summer market of 2017, Ederson marked the start of a transformed vision for Etihad goalkeepers, with manager Pep Guardiola insisting on playing the ball out from the back as opposed to aiming long.

With that change in style came enormous success, and many believe Ederson is the best in the business at operating within that style of goalkeeping. But with that comes immediate concern over how the future could look without the 30-year-old.

Ederson has been widely linked with a move to Saudi Arabia this summer, and Manchester City are unlikely to stand in his way should he be keen on a dramatic change of scenery for the final years of his top-level playing career.

Now, according to the information of journalist Rudy Galetti, Manchester City are ‘opening up’ to the idea of reducing their asking price this summer in order to let go of Ederson, with some quarters suggesting the Brazilian is keen on a change of challenge.

Saudi Arabian Pro League club Al-Nassr, who some have suggested have already agreed personal terms with Manchester City’s number one choice, are now said to be ‘pushing’ to spend a sum ‘significantly lower’ than the initially requested €50 million asking price.

Simultaneously, in a detail that may give Manchester City fans some hope of retaining Ederson beyond the ongoing summer transfer market, the Saudi club are said to be continuing their talks over Liverpool’s Alisson.

Manchester City have long maintained the position that should a player hold a desire to leave Pep Guardiola’s playing squad, and their representatives are able to bring a suitable offer to the negotiating table, then a deal will be sanctioned.

That is a position that was recently confirmed by Kevin De Bruyne during an interview with Belgian media, as he explained, “If there is a good offer and you tell Pep you want to leave, that is possible. This may be different at other clubs. But I’ve never indicated I want to leave.”

De Bruyne himself has also been linked with various solutions away from Manchester City this summer, with the 33-year-old’s existing Etihad contract expiring at the end of the 2024/25 season and Saudi Pro League suitors circling alongside equivalents from Major League Soccer.
