Manchester City name new captain ahead of WSL season opener

Manchester City are one of the hot favourites to take the WSL title this season, and their season kicks off with a huge trip to Arsenal this Sunday.

And ahead of that big game, the club have announced a new captain for 2024/25.

That’s England star Alex Greenwood, who made the move to Manchester from Lyon back in 2020.

“If you want to be successful in this competition you have to play the best teams and that’s what we want to do,” the defender explained when asked about the opener against Arsenal.

“I can feel the excitement around the place now as the season gets closer to starting. We’re ready now.”

Boss Gareth Taylor added “I always look for the Club captain to embody everything and Alex is that. [There are] big shoes to fill in from Steph Houghton.

“Alex is a big driver of the way we do things on and off the pitch. She’s a top player.”

Man City have already recorded their first big win of the campaign, defeating Paris FC by a 5-0 scoreline in the Champions League.
