Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has shown his enduring connection with Barcelona by sending a message of support to his former teammates ahead of tonight’s El Clasico against Real Madrid.

Barcelona are all set to take on their arch-rivals in the first Clasico of the season tonight at the Santiago Bernabeu, with kickoff less than half an hour away.

Ahead of the big game tonight, the German midfielder, who rejoined the Premier League champions this summer after one season at the Catalan club, took to social media to encourage his former teammates.

El Clasico Vamoooos! It’s been some great results and performances recently – very happy my former teammates are doing such an amazing job so far. Tonight the big, big game good luck & Força Barça!” wrote Gundogan on X.

The 34-year-old’s return to Manchester City came as a surprise move during the summer transfer window, following just one season in Spain where he made 51 appearances for Barcelona and helped them secure a second-place finish in La Liga.

Gundogan’s brief but impactful spell in Catalonia clearly left a lasting impression, as evidenced by his continued support for his former club.

The former German international lost all three of his El Clasico encounters in his only season with the Blaugrana and will hope that his ex-teammates experience a different outcome this time out.

Barcelona have named an unchanged line-up from the midweek win over Bayern Munich and will hope to secure another big win tonight to extend their lead in the La Liga table to six points.
