Have Manchester City identified the ideal player to fix their midfield woes?
As Manchester City slumped to their fourth consecutive defeat with a 2-1 defeat to Brighton today there were various storylines to emerge from the game. Injuries and a heavy schedule have decimated Pep Guardiola’s side. The champions are unable to sustain their dominance over a full 90 minutes. Another story to emerge so that Manchester City’s midfield is being overrun. It is too open and easy to play through. The loss of Rodri has stood out in this area. A new report indicates that Manchester City may have identified the ideal player to solve their midfield woes. Is a January move for Atalanta midfielder Ederson now on the cards?
Mark Douglas has reported for iNews that Ederson is potentially a midfield target for Manchester City. Douglas adds that the world champions may look to sign a midfielder in January. With Rodri out for the season, City do appear in need of another midfielder. Lastly, Douglas adds that Ederson is reportedly open to the move if a transfer fee can be agreed between Manchester City and Atalanta.
Manchester City need energy in midfield and Ederson would add exactly that.
As the second half wore on at the Amex Stadium it was clear that Manchester City’s midfield had run out of legs. Brighton dominated the second half after City had dominated the first half. But what stood out was by mid-way through the second half, Manchester City had no energy in midfield. Try as they might Mateo Kovacic, Ilkay Gundogan and Phil Foden couldn’t wrestle control of the game back from a younger and hungrier opponent. The loss of Rodri for the season further cripples City’s midfield. Somehow Pep Guardiola’s side must get through to January before they can add another midfielder. But if they are looking for energy and a proper defensive midfielder to supplement their current assets Ederson is that man.
The Brazilian midfielder is the heart beat of Atalanta’s midfield. His ability on the ball is a weapon for Atalanta. But more importantly he is a energetic midfielder with the ability to break up the play. He also screens Atalanta’s defence and that is a player Manchester City desperately need in January.
It does appear that City may have identified the ideal player to fix their midfield woes. Ederson does seem to be that player. It remains to be seen if the Brazilian midfielder is attainable in January. But if he is the champions should be first in the queue to sign the Atalanta midfielder destroyer.
