Manchester City handed potential release clause boost as transfer target has deadline extended

Premier League champions Manchester City may have been handed somewhat of a boost in their hopes of signing RB Leipzig’s Dani Olmo this summer.

Etihad Stadium bosses remain in the process of working towards securing Pep Guardiola additional recruits for his first-team squad, with the new pre-season period now less than two weeks away from starting over in the United States.

So far, Manchester City have only finalised an agreement for one new arrival for the forthcoming campaign, with Savio expected to put pen to paper on a five-year deal until the summer of 2029, and join the first-team squad for the 2024/25 season.

But there is a clear intention to recruit in the centre of the park both due to a lack of cover for Rodrigo in defensive midfield, and concerns over the longevity of Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva in Sky Blue.

One potential target in Dani Olmo is currently starring for Spain at the European Championships in Germany, and his three goals and two assists in five appearances at the tournament have attracted widespread suitors in a release clause that has now been updated.

According to the information of Spanish newspaper Sport, as translated and relayed by Sport Witness, Spain’s progression to the final of the ongoing European Championships means that Dani Olmo’s clause has been given an extension.

That extension has seen the €60 million clause and it’s deadline pushed back by five days, and as such rather than expiring on the Monday 15 July, it will now expire on Saturday 20 July, allowing clubs additional time to make a decision.

Manchester City have been tipped as long-term admirers in Dani Olmo, and explored a deal for the player during the summer transfer window of 2023 as club bosses looked to cover themselves as a result of a long-term injury sustained by Kevin De Bruyne.

Ultimately the Premier League champions turned to Matheus Nunes of Wolverhampton Wanderers in a £53 million agreement that is yet to reap the top-level rewards that many in the game know the Portuguese playmaker is capable of.

Bruno Guimaraes continues to be another target high on Manchester City’s list this summer, however the Brazilian is currently away on holiday and Newcastle United remain keen on securing a fee in the region of £100 million for their star man.
