With the title race closer than ever, Manchester City travelled to face Brighton in the Women’s Super League.

The two sides last met in November with Brighton taking all three points from a narrow 1–0 victory. Since then the Sky Blues have embarked on a title race that has seen them maintain a perfect league record.

Starting XIs

Brighton: Baggaley; Thorisdottir, Bergsvand, Losada, Olme, Terland, Carabali, Kullberg, Pinto, Haley, Robinson

Manchester City: Keating; Aleixandri, Greenwood, Coombs, Fowler, Hemp, Ouahabi, Park, Casparij, Shaw, Hasegawa

How it went

A quick start to the tie saw Lauren Hemp give the visitors the lead. Finding the back of the net with 27 minutes on the clock, the forward slotted the ball beyond Sophie Baggaley. The No. 11 was instrumental in the Sky Blue’s second goal as she fired the ball across the area for Mary Fowler. The Australian international’s goal doubled her side’s lead just five minutes before the break.

After a quiet start, Bunny Shaw got the goal-scoring action underway in the second half. The Jamaican international had struggled to find the net in recent games with her second-half effort her first goal since the start of March. Laura Coombs capped off the visitors’ scoring for the afternoon with a well-worked strike in the 78th minute.

Just as it appeared that City would close the goal difference gap to Chelsea to a single goal, former player Lee Geum-Min found the back of the net to earn the Seagulls a late consolation.

Brighton will face back-to-back away days against Leicester and West Ham as the WSL reaches its final stages. The Seagulls will then welcome Everton to the Broadfield Stadium.

Manchester City will host Saturday’s Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium. The Sky Blues will then travel to face Liverpool ahead of a home clash against West Ham.
