Manchester United have announced that Ruud van Nistelrooy has rejoined the club in a coaching capacity.

The Dutchman enjoyed a hugely successful spell at Old Trafford as a player, netting 150 goals and lifting four trophies in a five-year spell.

Van Nistelrooy now returns to make up part of Erik ten Hag’s backroom staff and has signed a two-year deal.

That takes him to the end of his compatriot’s own contract, with Ten Hag having penned an extension last week.

He is also joined as assistant coach by René Hake, who arrives after impressing with Go Ahead Eagles.

“Together with Erik, we are working to strengthen all areas of our men’s first-team operations, and refreshing the coaching staff is an important part of that,” said sporting director Dan Ashworth.

“It’s a particular pleasure to welcome Ruud back to the club where he enjoyed so much success as a player, and I know that he and René will help reinforce the winning mentality and high standards we are aiming for.”

Van Nistelrooy does have his own experience as a head coach, having recently spent a season in charge of PSV.
