Man United were interested in Bologna midfielder Lewis Ferguson in the summer
Despite the addition of Manuel Ugarte, Manchester United still look short on numbers in midfield, having not adequately replaced the likes of Scott McTominay and Sofyan Amrabat.
Casemiro’s struggles are continuing while Erik ten Hag has warned fans against expecting too much from the new Uruguayan recruit, who is expected to make his debut against Southampton.
Kobbie Mainoo remains the first name on the teamsheet but he has been overplayed by both club and country since his debut and needs rest.
But with Christian Eriksen his only alternative, the Dutch manager has been forced to keep playing the England international as the Dane simply does not have the legs anymore to compete in the big games.
Midfielder needed
An injury to the Englishman and Ten Hag could be forced to rely heavily on academy star Toby Collyer and that is why the club have been linked with a move for free agent Adrien Rabiot.
Whether INEOS will go against their policy to sign the Frenchman remains to be seen with the new co-owners focussing on signing players 26 and under.
One player who fits the bill and someone the club are keeping a close eye on is Bologna’s versatile midfiel ace Lewis Ferguson.
As per Il Corriere dello Sport (via Football Italia), United were interested in a summer move for the Scotland international but ultimately jumped for his former teammate Joshua Zirkzee instead.
United were interested in Ferguson
Bologna remain fearful of a future approach and despite the 25-year-old having a contract until 2027, they are keen on offering him improved terms and ensure he signs on the dotted line until 2029.
Ferguson is happy in Italy and open to extending his stay and the club remain in dialogue with his agent. The Scottish ace suffered a knee injury last season and is currently sidelined. He is expected back in action in November.
Last season, he netted six times and assisted five more goals and played as the attacking midfielder and further back. He can also play on the wings and upfront if needed and his versatility makes him a huge draw for interested clubs.
He currently has a market value of €24 million, which will only increase further should an agreement be reached. United will find it much more difficult to prise him away from Italy should that happen.
