Carabao Cup draw – LIVE!

After Manchester United’s thrilling win over Premier League rivals Aston Villa despite a turgid first-half, the draw for the fourth-round of the League Cup gets underway, with all ties now complete. Peter Schmeichel and Dion Dublin, alongside host Mark Chapman, are on duty as the competition prepares to enter the next stage.

After a busy programme, Manchester City, Newcastle and Liverpool remain in the draw, alongside Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth, Leicester and Southampton. Lower down the pyramid, MK Dons, Charlton (London’s only club), Gillingham, Burnley and Lincoln are all through. Certainly, there’s the potential for some glamour ties, as well as some heavyweight fixtures.

Clearly, it’s hard to focus on England’s second cup competition with the World Cup just days away, but the vigour with which the third round was played would suggest this is a real prize for many. Keep across the draw LIVE with Standard Sport’s coverage!

United are through after a thrilling second-half.

Up next, the fourth-round draw!

GOAL! Man United 4-2 Aston Villa | Scott McTominay ‘90

21:52 , Jonathan Gorrie

90:00 - Garnacho plays a brilliant ball through to McTominay, who bundles one home.

21:50 , Jonathan Gorrie

GOAL! Man United 3-2 Aston Villa | Bruno Fernandes ‘78

21:40 , Jonathan Gorrie

78:00 - Awful play from Villa at the back sees Garnacho rob Olsen’s poor back pass, he passes to Fernandes, who sees his shot deflected off Mings and past Olsen.

CHANCE FOR MAN UNITED!

21:37 , Jonathan Gorrie

71:00 - Maguire sees his header from a corner saved from Olsen.

GOAL! Man United 2-2 Aston Villa | Marcus Rashford ‘67

21:29 , Jonathan Gorrie

67:00 - Brilliant play from Rashford, who refuses to go down when tackled in the box and powers in a fine finish.

Who said this game was dull?!

Man United changes

21:26 , Jonathan Gorrie

GOAL! Man United 1-2 Aston Villa

21:23 , Jonathan Gorrie

61:00 - Sub Leon Bailey, who destroyed United only a few days ago, heads right into Dalot, who cannot do anything as the ball bounces off him and past Dubravka.

NOW this feels like a cup tie

21:14 , Jonathan Gorrie

51:00 - United have woken up!

Martial almost taps in from a Rashford ,cross.

GOAL! Man United 1-1 Aston Villa | Anthony Martial ‘49

21:11 , Jonathan Gorrie

49:00 - Where has this come from?!

Martial taps in from Fernandes’ cross as United go on the attack from kick-off.

GOAL! Man United 0-1 Aston Villa

21:09 , Jonathan Gorrie

48:00 - Ramsey wins the ball in his own half, breaks away from the chasing pack and frees Watkins, who finishses well and chips Dubravka.

United’s last game at Old Trafford before the World Cup

21:07 , Jonathan Gorrie

46:00 - Not exactly going off in style at the moment.

Back underway

21:07 , Jonathan Gorrie

Here we go!

Surely it’s got to get better?

Not a good night for Donny!

21:02 , Jonathan Gorrie

HT: Man United 0-0 Aston Villa

20:52 , Jonathan Gorrie

Well, that was cagey.

1 minute added on

20:49 , Jonathan Gorrie

45:00 - Surely one of the dullest first-halfs Old Trafford has seen will soon come to a close.

Neither goalkeeper called upon

20:47 , Jonathan Gorrie

42:00 - That about sums this game up so far. Penalty shootout looking incredibly ominous.

Rashford free-kick blocked

20:44 , Jonathan Gorrie

40:00 - Rashford lines up a free-kick but sees a powerful shot blocked by the Villa wall.

Have to wonder, will he ever score one of those again?

Tired looking teams

20:38 , Jonathan Gorrie

36:00 - This looks like one game too many for most of the players.

Such sloppy play all over the park.

CHANCE FOR ASTON VILLA!

20:35 , Jonathan Gorrie

32:00 - Trusty as ever from corners, Douglas Luiz’s delivery has to be cleared by McTominay before it goes straight into the back of the net.

Good spell from Villa.

Villa moving up the pitch

20:32 , Jonathan Gorrie

30:00 - After a good spell from Man United, Villa are progressing up the field.

Not a huge amount of convinction in their play when they do get as far as the United penalty-box, however.

CHANCE FOR MAN UNITED!

20:27 , Jonathan Gorrie

25:00 - Great work from Rashford and Malacia, with the latter overlapping after the former had isolated Ashley Young before crossing over to Dalot,

The defender, however, sees his effort blocked for a corner. Which comes to nothing.

United offside

20:22 , Jonathan Gorrie

20:00 - Martial taps in from a Rashford cross but the United forwards are flagged well offside.

Villa having a lot of the ball, though mainly in their own area.

Sloppy play

20:19 , Jonathan Gorrie

17:00 - Both Ramsey and McTominay in good positions to feed strikers but lack that killer pass.

Making for a congested midfield.

Villa compact

20:17 , Jonathan Gorrie

14:00 - Of little surprise of course given Emery’s arrival but, as compact as they are, there are some teething issues.

The balls coming forward are too hopeful, with Watkins having to feed off scraps.

United getting on the ball now

20:13 , Jonathan Gorrie

10:00 - The home side looking a lot more comfortable now, with Rashford and Malacia interchanging in some really sharp United movement.

Risky business from Villa

20:07 , Jonathan Gorrie

05:00 - Martial looking to get in behind Chambers, who dawdles before heading back to Olsen.

United almost in there. Lively start to this one.

High Villa press

20:05 , Jonathan Gorrie

02:00 - Maguire having to go all the way back to Dubravka, two players who haven’t exactly looked comfortable of late.

Big night for van de Beek

20:04 , Jonathan Gorrie

01:00 - It just hasn’t worked out so far for the Dutchman but a big performance tonight could really raise his morale before the World Cup,

If it’s not going to work under ten Hag, it’s hard to see how it ever will.

Could be a big evening for Man United

19:16 , Jonathan Gorrie

Given the fact a number of Premier League teams were knocked out last night, winning here could give United a great chance of making the latter stages.

That feels important in Erik ten Hag’s first season.

Ronaldo in Portugal squad

It’s no surprise of course to see Cristiano Ronaldo in the Portugal squad, although interesting to see here’s not involved tonight.

Ten Hag’s long-term vision

18:46 , Jonathan Gorrie

Speaking to the club’s official website, Erik ten Hag said: “When we are two years further [on], I hope that we have developed a way of play. It has to be a proactive way, proactive football and that we are dominating and dictating games against all our competitors, so at the highest level.

“That is a really good challenge, so when you get that style into the squad, also we’ll see that players will develop to higher levels. The improvement not only has to come from being successful in the transfer market. That is definitely a part of it, but also it has to come from improvement that we get by coaching. That’s it, by managing, by coaching, by training.”

Unai Emery out to ‘avoid’ Arsenal mistakes at Aston Villa - ‘I am better prepared to face a new challenge’

18:33 , Jonathan Gorrie

Unai Emery has described his return to the Premier League as “more of a challenge than a rematch”.

The former Arsenal manager was appointed as Steven Gerrard’s successor at Aston Villa last month and oversaw a 3-1 win over Manchester United during his first game in charge.

While a hugely respected manager in European competition following trophy-laden spells at Sevilla and Villareal, as well as Paris Saint-Germain, the 51-year-old struggled to wholly convince in England.

Given the difficult job of replacing Arsene Wenger in 2018, Emery did not lead Arsenal back into the Champions League – finishing fifth in his only full season - and was defeated in the Europa League final by London rivals Chelsea in convincing fashion.

Sacked in November 2019, Emery rebuilt his reputation by winning the Europa League with Villarreal, defeating United in the 2021 final.

Erik ten Hag slams ‘stupid’ crossing tactic at Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United players in defeat

18:03 , Jonathan Gorrie

Erik ten Hag hit out at his Manchester United players for their “stupid” tactics as they fell to defeat against Aston Villa.

In Unai Emery’s first match in charge of the club, Villa beat the visitors 3-1 with a brilliant display, with goals from Leon Bailey and Lucas Digne putting them two up before Jacob Ramsey ensured his earlier own-goal did not spark a United comeback.

It’s a result that leaves United 12 points off table-toppers Arsenal, with just one Premier League match to go before the break for the World Cup.

Asked if it was a deliberate tactic to look for so many early crosses towards Cristiano Ronaldo as United struggled in the first-half, Ten Hag made it clear he was not impressed with what he saw.

Man United transfers: Double blow as Milan Skriniar and Eric-Maxim Choupo Moting set for contract talks

17:40 , Jonathan Gorrie

Manchester United have been handed a transfer blow by both Inter Milan and Bayern Munich.

While Erik ten Hag was backed with the late additions of Casemiro and Antony, United bosses were criticised for a slow summer of action.

As such, the club are being linked with a number of players in the January window, with ten Hag publicly admitting he was eager for reinforcement.

“We need options,” said the Dutchman after United’s win over Real Sociedad.

United are four points off fourth-placed Newcastle with a game in hand and will be in the mix for Champions League qualification when club resumes in December following the World Cup.
