Manchester United U21 maintained their impeccable form in the National League Cup, beating National League side Oldham Athletic 5-0 on Wednesday evening at Boundary Park.

Head coach Travis Binnion named a strong starting line-up for the clash, including Chido Obi-Martin, Jack Moorhouse, Godwill Kukinki and Habeeb Ogunneye.

The club’s top goalscorer in the tournament, Ethan Ennis, missed the encounter, having joined Doncaster Robers on loan.

United started the game strongly, with the first chance falling to Malachi Sharpe, but the young winger could not convert.

Obi-Martin wasted three chances, while Samuel Mather also could not hit the target after being put through on goal.

Jack Moorhouse gave the away side the lead in the 64th minute, brilliantly making his way into the area before firing a low shot past goalkeeper Jacob Dennis.

Obi-Martin doubled United’s lead in the 71st minute to score his first goal in the tournament, tapping the ball into the net after Dennis saved Moorhouse’s effort.

Sharpe grabbed the third of the game, firing a low shot home before Mather added to United’s tally with a shot into the top corner.

Victor Musa, who came on for Obi-Martin, rounded off the scoring in the stoppage time, heading the ball into the goal from Sam Murray’s corner.

United finished as group winners, garnering 12 points from four games. They will be seeded for the quarter-final draw.

This is the first time the competition has been staged since the 2008/2009 season. United will be aiming to win it for the first time.
