Manchester United are reportedly confident about their prospects of completing a deal for a left-back during the upcoming January transfer window.

The left-back position has been a problem all season amidst Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia’s injury struggles.

At the moment, Shaw remains sidelined after suffering a fresh setback earlier this month while Malacia is gradually building up his match fitness after an extremely lengthy period away from the action.

Diogo Dalot has mostly filled in at left-back and left-wing-back under Ruben Amorim but the 25-year-old, who is naturally a right-back by trade, has hardly been convincing.

United are understood to be on the market for reinforcements with a number of targets on their radar.

Some of the players the Red Devils continue to be linked to include Alphonso Davies (Bayern Munich), Milos Kerkez (Bournemouth), Miguel Gutierrez (Girona), Alvaro Fernandez Carreras (Benfica), Antonee Robinson (Fulham) and Rayan Ait-Nouri (Wolverhampton Wanderers).

There have been doubts about United’s ability to spend significantly in January amidst the pressures brought about by the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules but according to Marca journalist Chris Winterburn, Amorim’s side fancy their chances of recruiting a left-back.

Winterburn wrote on X, “Anyway, onto positives regarding Manchester United. Understand the club are fairly confident in signing a left back early in the January window.”

“Shaw’s fitness a concern, Malacia also has had fitness problems.”

“Having to keep swapping Dalot around has backfired. Club has interest in Miguel Gutierrez, but there is also the buyback on Alvaro Fernandez.”

“Both economically appealing deals.”

United are back in action on Boxing Day when they face Wolves at Molineux Stadium.
