Man bun saves Russell Martin from injury

Are man buns here to ruin baseball — or save it?

Though the much-maligned hair style has received its fair share of negative attention the past few years, Tuesday’s strange incident involving Russell Martin and a Philadelphia Phillies dugout net raised new questions surrounding the place of the common man bun in sport.

Did Martin’s hipster hairdo almost completely derail the Blue Jays 2018 campaign before it even started? Or did it, in fact, save the team’s No. 1 catcher from suffering season-ending head trauma?

Tracking a foul ball Tuesday in the second inning of a Grapefruit League game against Philadelphia, Russ did Russ things and made a spectacular catch for the out as he crashed into the netting to the side of the Phillies dugout. Martin appeared to escape the collision without peril until, while trying to return on his feat, the Jays’ No. 1 backstop became entangled in said net and went tumbling to the ground before a pole struck the 35-year-old right in the melon.

The tightly-wrapped flow nugget which lay atop Martin’s head likely (according to science, probably) caused Martin to make the potentially disastrous decision to hunt down a sketchy foul ball during a pre-season game with Opening day less than two weeks away.

On the other hand, that slick and dense ‘do provided a shield to protect Martin not only from a frontside attack as a pole attached to the netting slammed into his head, but also from the impact of the ground which, for the sake of this story, could have caused Martin to miss a boatload of games this year with a nasty concussion.

The man bun almost ruined the blue Jays season but, after looking at the evidence, more than likely saved it.

Man buns refuse to fade away. Man buns deserve our respect.
