Malik Nabers to wear jersey No. 1 for Giants after family of late Hall of Famer Ray Flaherty gives blessing

NEW YORK — The New York Giants are unretiring jersey No. 1, with the blessing of late Hall of Famer Ray Flaherty’s family, for Giants rookie receiver Malik Nabers.

“Thank you to the Flaherty family for allowing me to wear Number 1 for the New York Giants,” Nabers said in a statement. “I understand the responsibility, and I will do everything in my power to honor the Flaherty family and this organization. I will wear the number with great pride. Can’t wait for the season to start.”

Flaherty’s number was the first to be retired in Pro Football History. The three-time, first-team All-Pro is credited with two football innovations: the behind-the-line screen pass and the two-platoon substitution system.

Nabers, the No. 6 overall pick in April’s draft, has been wearing jersey No. 9 all offseason but now has the number he will take onto the field in Week 1 against the Minnesota Vikings.
