It has been a good couple of days in terms of recognition for Mike Maignan, who has been nominated for the Yashin Trophy and received a trophy for his exploits at Euro 2024.

The Ballon d’Or nominees for the 2024 edition of the prestigious award were released yesterday, with players voted for by journalists and peers, and Maignan has made the Yashin Trophy shortlist.

The award is named after legendary Soviet Union shot-stopper Lev Yashin and is essentially the Ballon d’Or for goalkeepers. The full list is as follows:

Maignan (AC Milan), Diogo Costa (FC Porto), Gregor Kobel (Borussia Dortmund), Andriy Lunin (Real Madrid), Giorgi Mamardashvili (Liverpool), Emiliano Martinez (Aston Villa), Unai Simon (Athletic Club), Ronwen Williams (Mamelodi Sundowns) and Yann Sommer (Inter).

In addition to that nomination, Maignan received the trophy for the most clean sheets at the 2024 European Championship. He racked up four as France got to the semi-finals before losing against Spain.

Now, the Milan management will be called upon to recognise his status as one of the elite players in his position through a contract renewal, given his deal expires in 2026. The latest signs, however, are positive.
