Luke Cavallin is Getting More Playing Time

Luke Cavallin is starting to get more playing time with the elevation of teammate Jakub Dobes to the Montreal Canadiens. This goalie is interesting because he is a right-handed goalie who had some solid years in the ECHL.

There is no shame when a goalie has to play in the ECHL these days. There’s only so much playing time to go around and the fact that he’s just 23 means he could still have a future with the club so signing him made sense.

Last year he was in the Toronto Maple Leafs organization and posted a .952 save percentage with the Newfoundland Growlers but only a .884 with the Toronto Marlies.

This year, he had a .952 save percentage with Trois-Rivieres. That’s great, but he’s only had two starts with the Rocket. That’s changing and he’s getting a game instantly against the Syracuse Crunch. This season in the AHL, he posted a .926 save percentage. Again, very solid, so let’s see what he has now that he’s getting more playing time in the near future.

I like his leg extension, and he covers post-to-post well. However, I think he has some issues seeing through traffic. 6’1” isn’t tall for a goalie these days, and you can see him struggle with that occasionally.

Cavallin reads and reacts well, and his positioning is solid. Who knows what will happen with him next year, but I always keep an eye on goalies with a longer developmental cycle. Weirder things have happened and he’s getting a bit better each season.
