Luka Modric offers cryptic update on Croatia future

Luka Modric is facing a key few weeks in deciding his future for club and country.

Real Madrid have offered the veteran midfielder a 12 month contract extension for the 2024/25 campaign.

Despite looking certain to end his time in Madrid, Modric is set to extend his bond with the club, into a 13th season.

If he accepts the offer, he will take the captaincy with Nacho Fernandez moving to Saudi Arabia.

However, his international future is less clear, following Croatia’s Euro 2024 group stage exit.

Modric has previously indicated his desire to play on for Croatia for as long as he remains in Madrid with a desire to reach the 2026 World Cup.

However, a post-tournament social media post has caused confusion over whether he intends to keep going to step aside.

“With this shirt I have felt the moments of greatest joy and pride in my life. At Euro 2024, we experienced the less beautiful side of football, but the pride of playing for Croatia does not depend on results. Thank you for the great support”, he said.

Modric already has 178 international caps, and he could break 200 in the coming years, something which only his old teammate Cristiano Ronaldo has managed in men’s football.
