Longtime Macon sportscaster headed to Georgia High School Association in new media role

A longtime Macon sportscaster will soon serve as the Georgia High School Association’s media relations director.

The association’s incoming executive director, Tim Scott, recently announced that Marvin James of 13WMAZ will be stepping into his new role in July.

James celebrated 25 years with Channel 13 in May. In a social media post on May 10, he thanked everyone for helping him celebrate.

In an interview with The Telegraph, James said he is grateful for his journey and impact on the community.

“For the past 25 years, I’ve had the honor and privilege to serve Central Georgia through the lens of a journalist at 13WMAZ. I’ve been able to help, educate, inform, entertain and learn a lot along the way,” James said. “It has been incredibly inspiring. I’m grateful for my time and friends at the station who have been there for me during all my life events.”

James will take over for the retiring Steve Figueroa, who has held the position since 2001. James is a former Georgia Southern and Warner Robins High football player.

This was the first hire for Scott, who was hired himself in April and will begin full time next month in succeeding the retiring Robin Hines, according to the announcement.

“Marvin is going to do a great job for us,” Scott said. “He’s covered all kinds of sports in middle Georgia for over 25 years, he’s done social media, he can tell a story, write stories, he was part of the GHSA when he played sports.”

James said he is looking forward to the future and continuing to serve.

“I pray that I can continue to provide leadership, growth and change for the people I will continue to serve going forward - straight from the heart,” he said.

Jeff Dudley, president and general manager of 13WMAZ said the station wishes Marvin all the best and thanks him for his many years of service at 13WMAZ.

The Georgia High School Association is a voluntary organization composed of over 465 public and private high schools.
