London Knights Acquire Hometown Defenseman Liam Spencer from Brampton

The Brampton Steelheads made a statement when they acquired Kitchener Rangers forward and Seattle Kraken prospect Carson Rehkopf, letting the rest of the OHL know they are ready to push for an OHL Championship.

But, GM and Head Coach James Richmond completed another trade yesterday with the reigning OHL champs, the London Knights.

London announced Wednesday that the team had acquired left-shot defenseman Liam Spencer and a second-round pick in 2025 from Brampton in exchange for a second, fourth, and seventh-round pick.

Spencer, 18, played only four games for the Steelheads recording two assists. He also played eight games for the team in 2022-23.

Liam spent the majority of the year playing at the Jr. B level for the Strathroy Rockets in the GOJHL. He registered 27 points in 29 games and racked up the penalty minutes with 91.

The 6-foot-4, 215-pound blueliner is from London, Ontario, and played out his OHL draft year with the London Jr. Knights U16 AAA organization. He was an assistant captain alongside Guelph centerman and Philadelphia Flyers first-rounder Jett Luchanko.

One other neat note from that 2006-born Jr. Knights team is that Niagara IceDogs rookie all-star Ryan Roobroeck played a year up as an ‘07 and led the team in scoring.

The Knights have two members of their Championship-winning blueline graduating to the professional level — Isaiah George and Jackson Edward. Also, I wouldn’t rule out the possibility of Oliver Bonk and Sam Dickinson making their NHL team's opening night roster.

This move by GM Mark Hunter gives the team depth on the backend in case Bonk and Dickinson aren’t available to the team. Spencer would most likely slot into the team’s third pair. His size and aggressiveness fit the way Head Coach Dale Hunter wants his team to play.

OHL GMs are starting to dial up their phones more frequently as we’ve seen the trade market pick up since the start of the week.
