Lombardy president reveals hope that Milan and Inter ‘stay in San Siro’

The president of the Lombardy region, Attilio Fontana, revealed his hope that AC Milan and Inter return to building a new stadium together in San Siro.

There was a meeting last week involving several key figures connected to the clubs and local government, after which it filtered that it could lead the clubs to submit an expression of interest regarding the construction of a shared stadium again in the San Siro area.

The Mayor of San Donato Francesco Squeri requested an urgent meeting with the Milan management and ownership in order to clarify what their intentions are, given they have spent over €50m on land in his region having declared their mission to build there.

However, the club president Paolo Scaroni spoke recently and reassured him that their priority remains to build in the San Francesco area of San Donato, with the Program Agreement process already underway.

Now, the Lombardy Region president Fontana has spoken in an interview with MilanNews about the latest developments on the stadium front and he expressed his own personal hope that the clubs remain in their current area.

In the end, will Inter and Milan remain at San Siro?

“Well, let’s say it’s an idea that has been abandoned and they’re starting to go back over it. Then we’ll have to see whether they’ll find an agreement in the end, whether it’s the solution.

“For example, I’ve read statements from the president of Milan, who reiterates that the San Donato option is still the one that’s seen as a priority. Let’s see.

“Let’s say there are more opportunities, let’s see that there are more possibilities, so I think the teams will know how to choose the best one.”

What would the timescale be?

“And it doesn’t depend on me. It’s clear that the program agreement on the Milan stadium outside Milan has already started, so I think they will now have to make medium-term decisions, not very short terms, but fairly short ones.”

What do you hope, for the city of Milan?

“I hope that Milan and Inter stay at San Siro. Not in the San Siro stadium, but in the San Siro area.”
