Loaning Will Smith To USA For World Juniors Doesn't Make Sense For Sharks

A report surfaced yesterday that the San Jose Sharks could loan star rookie center to Team USA at the 2025 World Juniors is a possibility. Still, in speaking with a source, that situation is unlikely.

While he could greatly benefit Team USA, it doesn't make sense for him to play. The Sharks have been very deliberate about how they intend to develop their young star. His development days are focused on specific aspects of being a full-time NHLer.

GM Mike Grier told reporters the Sharks have no intention of sending Smith to the American Hockey League. A source told THN that the team views him as an NHL player. San Jose's approach this season is proving what the source said.

Another reason he likely won't be loaned is his success in the 2024 tournament. Smith had four goals and five assists in seven games and helped the Americans win gold. He has nothing left to prove at the junior hockey level.

Anything is possible, and the Sharks could send Smith to the World Juniors, but based on the tea leaves, it seems unlikely that he will go.
