On-loan Barcelona defender earns high praise for exceptional form – ‘He’s much more intelligent’
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has shared his thoughts ahead of their clash against Salzburg, particularly focusing on Clement Lenglet, who is currently on loan from Barcelona.
The French defender has become a key figure for Atletico’s backline and has contributed significantly to their defensive stability.
Simeone pointed out the different strengths of his defenders, praising Lenglet’s tactical intelligence and composure on the ball.
While Robin Le Normand and Jose Maria Gimenez are known for their speed and aerial dominance, Lenglet’s positioning and passing abilities have added a new dimension to Atletico’s game.
“Clement is more positional, much more intelligent from his physical structure and takes advantage of his characteristics.
“Perhaps, in the air Jose is better, Robin is very strong in duels and Clement plays very well with his foot and generates something different for us in our start,” he said as quoted by SPORT.
Atletico Madrid want Lenglet
Reports suggest that Atletico Madrid are now pushing to make Lenglet’s move permanent during the ongoing January transfer window.
The Frenchman initially joined the club on a season-long loan deal without a purchase option. Despite a slow start to his time in the Spanish capital, he has worked his way into Simeone’s plans and is now seen as an integral part of the team’s defence.
Atletico are eager to finalise the transfer sooner rather than waiting until the summer when Lenglet will be entering the final year of his contract with Barcelona.
Lenglet’s ability to play out from the back and his positional awareness make him a valuable asset for Simeone, who is known for building strong defensive units.
If the deal is completed, it could be a significant boost for Barcelona as they continue to look for ways to generate funds. For Barcelona, moving Lenglet on permanently would help reduce their wage bill and free up resources for future signings.
