Loading The Cannon: Jordan Harris - Columbus Blue Jackets Defenseman
Jordan Harris was acquired yesterday by the Blue Jackets in exchange for Patrik Laine. That chapter in CBJ history is finally finished.
So who is Jordan Harris?
Harris hails from Haverhill, MA, a small town north of Boston on the Massachusetts and New Hampshire border.

As most young hockey players from that region tend to do, he attended one of the many colleges with a strong hockey history - Northeastern University. Former Cleveland Monster goalie and Goaltending Development Coach Brad Thiessen is a Northeastern alum.
After being drafted in 2018, Harris went on to play for Northeastern, playing for four years. In those four years, he would score 15 goals and total 73 points. He was named Captain of the team his senior year.

After his senior year in 2022, he turned pro, joining the Montréal Canadiens towards the end of the NHL season. He played in 10 games, scoring one goal.
In 2022-23 he played in 65 games for the Habs. He scored 4 goals and had 17 points. In February of 2023, Montréal signed Harris to a two-year contract extension worth $2,800,000.
Last season, he only played in 56 games for Montréal. On November 21st he was placed on injured reserve with a lower-body injury, missing 15 games. He returned to the lineup in late December. This injury happened just days after being medically cleared from an upper-body injury. In February of 2024, Harris suffered another upper-body injury that held him out of the lineup for three games. He finished last season with 3 goals and 14 points.
One scouting report says about Harris,
Has very good mobility and puck-moving savvy. Thinks the game well and can carry the play. Is also adept at quarterbacking the power play. Is an offensive producer. Even for the way the NHL is played today, he is undersized and lacking in strength. Also, he plays a soft brand of hockey at times, something he will need to correct soon.
His long-range potential is listed as a "Mobile, smart puck-moving defenseman with upside."
Many people wonder where Harris will slot in on the blue line. All indications are that Harris is an NHL defenseman, and that's where he'll play. Harris has never played anywhere but the NHL after college, as he hasn't been sent to the AHL at all in his career.
He's a left-shot, so he'll join Zach Werenski, Ivan Provorov, and Jack Johnson on the roster. This then leaves many to speculate that incoming rookie Denton Mateychuk will be playing in the AHL next season. This isn't a bad thing, and Don Waddell has said on multiple occasions that he likes his young players to get some AHL experience before throwing them to the wolves in the NHL. Also at LD are Stanislav Svozil, Jake Christiansen, and Samuel Kňažko, so it's a little crowded.
Harris seems to be exactly what the Jackets need - a young, defense-first defenseman who has some offense to his game.
