Liverpool 1-0 West Ham LIVE! Nunez seals win - Premier League result, match stream and latest updates today

Liverpool 1-0 West Ham LIVE! Nunez seals win - Premier League result, match stream and latest updates today

Darwin Nunez’s first Liverpool goal at Anfield was enough to earn his side a nervy 1-0 victory over West Ham United in the Premier League on Wednesday.

The Uruguayan forward, signed in June for an initial 75 million euros ($73 million), planted a superb header into West Ham’s net in the 22nd minute to give Liverpool the lead.

He was close to a second when he rattled the post with a ferocious shot as Liverpool dominated the early exchanges.

But West Ham grew in confidence and had a golden chance to level before halftime but Jarrod Bowen’s penalty kick was well-saved by home keeper Alisson.

Liverpool, lacking the intensity they showed in their 1-0 defeat of Manchester City on Sunday, struggled to contain a lively West Ham after the break.

West Ham would have taken a deserved point home had either Said Benrahma or Tomas Soucek converted great chances.

Victory lifted Liverpool into seventh place with 16 points from 10 games. West Ham’s first defeat in four league games left them in 13th place with 11 points.

Analysis

You have to play everyone twice, the old truth goes, but how West Ham must wish this Anfield assignment had arrived a week or two earlier.

Until putting seven past Rangers last Wednesday, Liverpool were in a state of near-crisis, winless in the Premier League since the end of August, out of the title race and reeling.

They will need snookers to get back into it, but after a 1-0 victory here made it three wins in eight days, suddenly Jurgen Klopp’s side find themselves within shouting distance of the top four and, just as importantly, with some of their mojo restored.

West Ham, who like the Reds rather missed the break at the start of the campaign and have been playing catch-up ever since, had been resurgent themselves, only denied a fifth win on the bounce by some wasteful finishing and touch-tight refereeing at Southampton on Sunday.

West Ham player ratings: Rice steps up; Scamacca hardly gets a look in

21:36 , Jonathan Gorrie

West Ham saw their unbeaten run ended at Liverpool as Darwin Nunez’s first Anfield goal proved the winner in Wednesday night’s Premier League clash.

Jarrod Bowen saw a tame penalty saved by Alisson Becker after a largely toothless first-half but David Moyes’ side improved after the break and should really have scored a late equaliser.

Darwin Nunez scored his first goal at Anfield as Liverpool beat West Ham to make it two Premier League wins in four days.

Nunez, ironically a player West Ham bid for back in January, may be far from the finished product but it is that rough edge to his game that makes him such an enthralling watch.

The decisive goal saw the Uruguayan bustle into the box, powering between defenders to mee Kostas Tsikimas’s inch-perfect cross and sending it back into the ground, with the resulting bounce proving too much for a scrambling Lukasz Fabianski.

FT: Liverpool 1-0 West Ham

21:25 , Jonathan Gorrie

Liverpool see off an improving West Ham thanks to Darwin Nunez’s first Anfield goal.

CHANCE FOR WEST HAM

21:15 , Jonathan Gorrie

87:00 - Soucek denied a tap-in when Milner throws his body on the line.

Declan Rice trying to do it all

21:11 , Jonathan Gorrie

83:00 - Stunning ball from the West Ham captain on the half-volley in-behind the Liverpool defence but none of his teammates read it.

Scamacca should score

21:09 , Jonathan Gorrie

81:00 - The Italian leads a counter-attack but blazes over rather than try to tee up a teammate. Terrible decision.

Malik Ouzia at Anfield

21:03 , Jonathan Gorrie

Back to 4-4-2 then. West Ham fans have been calling for a glimpse of Antonio and Scamacca on the pitch together and they’re going to get about 20 minutes of it here.

CHANCE FOR WEST HAM

20:59 , Jonathan Gorrie

69:00 - Benrahma can’t finish at the far post after getting between Alexander-Arnold and Gomez.

Signs of life, perhaps.

Wasted corner from West Ham

20:53 , Jonathan Gorrie

64:00 - So poor from set-pieces tonight, a huge frustration for Moyes.

No conviction to West Ham going forward

20:42 , Jonathan Gorrie

51:00 - Lots of good areas for West Ham tonight but that final ball has been lacking. They don’t look convinced they can score.

Malik Ouzia at Anfield

20:38 , Jonathan Gorrie

A change of shape at half-time for West Ham. Bowen has gone out to the right and Downes into a No10 role - presumable as much to try and stop Thiago running the show as for his creativity.

Poor play from West Ham

20:37 , Jonathan Gorrie

49:00 - Liverpool have been a little sloppy at times but West Ham keep failing to act on the loose ball.

CHANCE FOR LIVERPOOL

20:36 , Jonathan Gorrie

47:00 - Give and go from Henderson, into Salah and then back to the captain’s feet, though his shot from outside the box drifts over.

Back underway!

20:34 , Jonathan Gorrie

Here we go for the second-half!

HT: Liverpool 1-0 West Ham

20:18 , Jonathan Gorrie

45:00 - Nunez goal the difference so far but West Ham are still in this, though have missed a penalty.

Malik Ouzia at Anfield

20:17 , Jonathan Gorrie

Jarrod Bowen had been doing a fine job of ending West Ham’s penalty struggles but that looked a telegraphed effort. The noise for Alisson’s save was louder than for the goal.

VAR call

20:12 , Jonathan Gorrie

41:00 - Gomez brings Bowen down in the box. Looked reckless.

Malik Ouzia at Anfield

20:11 , Jonathan Gorrie

West Ham need half-time here. You can feel the confidence seeping back into this Liverpool side with every attack, even Jordan Henderson wheeling out the odd clever flick. Feels like a second goal is coming.

CHANCE FOR LIVERPOOL!

20:10 , Jonathan Gorrie

39:00 - Nunez hits the post with a volley! Could well have had a hat-trick tonight.

CHANCE FOR LIVERPOOL

20:05 , Jonathan Gorrie

34:00 - Brilliant ball from Thiago tees up Tskimikas for a cross, which is cleared into the feet of Alexnader-Arnold.

He then passes to Salah, who shoots wide.

Liverpool purring

20:04 , Jonathan Gorrie

32:00 - While West Ham were competitive in the opening stages, Liverpool are enjoying so much of the ball in dangerous areas at the moment. Salah, Thiago and Nunez all combining well outside West Ham’s box.

Players of their quality don’t need long.

Thiago the best player on the pitch

19:59 , Jonathan Gorrie

29:00 - On a different level to everyone else tonight, pulling strings.

Malik Ouzia at Anfield

19:57 , Jonathan Gorrie

West Ham’s are playing with split forwards out of possession and there’s very little in the way of a press. It’s an obvious ploy to be compact, but it’s allowing Thiago all the space in the world to dictate.

Malik Ouzia at Anfield

19:55 , Jonathan Gorrie

A bit of top-knot link-up. Cracking ball from Tsimikas and a good header from Nunez, though Moyes won’t be happy with the space the left-back had to deliver from deep.

Very close to 2-0

19:55 , Jonathan Gorrie

23:00 - Johnson wanted too much time at the ball and is dispossesed by Nunez, who sees his shot saved by Fabianski.

GOAL! Liverpool 1-0 West Ham | Darwin Nunez ‘21

19:52 , Jonathan Gorrie

21:00 - Only half chances to speak of but that’s all Nunez needs!

Brilliant cross from Tsimikas finds Nunez, who heads into the ground and past Fabianski!

Malik Ouzia at Anfield

19:50 , Jonathan Gorrie

Some pass that, from Thiago Alcantara. Credit Lukas Fabianski though - a good save and he also kept calm as it floated over the top, committed to staying on his line. Would’ve been easy to rush out and get caught in no man’s land.

West Ham giving as good as they’re getting

19:50 , Jonathan Gorrie

19:00 - An open game at Anfield, though only half chances to speak of thus far.

Still, West Ham look more than capable of causing Liverpool trouble.

CHANCE FOR LIVERPOOL!

19:45 , Jonathan Gorrie

14:00 - Brilliant save from Fabianski to get to Nunez’s dipping volley. Came from out of nowhere!

Well caught by Alisson

19:42 , Jonathan Gorrie

11:00 - At least his hands are working today!

West Ham win a dangerous free-kick

19:41 , Jonathan Gorrie

10:00 - Really poor from Thiago, who brings Soucek down by the corner flag, when the West Ham star was going nowhere.

Another poor clearance from Alisson

19:38 , Jonathan Gorrie

07:00 - Again, West Ham fail to do anything with the gift Alisson has just given them after a poor pass.

Malik Ouzia at Anfield

19:36 , Jonathan Gorrie

I suspect we could see quite a lopsided game here. With Diaz and Jota out, Liverpool have no natural left-winger and West Ham are playing their right-winger at centre-forward. Kostas Tsimikas looks very lonely out on this near flank.

Touch more reserved from Liverpool

19:35 , Jonathan Gorrie

04:00 - On Sunday, Liverpool were thunderous in the opening stages but appear to be adopting a slower tempo here, such is the danger West Ham pose on the break.

Malik Ouzia

19:33 , Jonathan Gorrie

It looks like West Ham are pretty much playing 4-4-2 here. Downes on the right of midfield and Bowen up front alongside Scamacca.

Very strange mistake from Alisson

19:32 , Jonathan Gorrie

01:00 - Alisson passed straight into Scamacaa when trying a short goal kick but West Ham can’t make the most of it.

Malik Ouzia at Anfield

19:31 , Jonathan Gorrie

Anfield is rocking as the teams emerge. You sense the mood here is rather different to a week ago after those two massive wins. This’ll be some test of West Ham’s good form since the international break.

Rice lives up to West Ham promise in glimpse of new approach

17:43 , Jonathan Gorrie

Less than a fortnight ago, Declan Rice sat in the depths of Anderlecht’s Lotto Park and talked of his desire to start grabbing more games “by the scruff of the neck”.

At St Mary’s yesterday, with the ball refusing to go in for West Ham’s more likely goalscorers, he did just that, exchanging passes with substitute Said Benrahma and driving forward before curling a sensational finish into the far corner to earn a 1-1 draw with struggling Southampton.

With 26 minutes to play, there was no dash to retrieve the ball, no head-down sprint back to the halfway line, Rice instead knee-sliding in front of the away end to salute a true captain’s goal, his first since inheriting the armband from Mark Noble on a permanent basis and ending a Premier League drought that had lasted almost a year.

FA investigate after Liverpool fans allegedly throw coins at Guardiola

17:34 , Jonathan Gorrie

The Football Association (FA) are set to launch an investigation into claims that Liverpool fans threw coins at Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola during yesterday’s 1-0 victory at Anfield.

Liverpool, meanwhile, condemned “vile chants relating to football stadium tragedies” the club said had been heard coming from the away end during the Premier League clash.

City were beaten for the first time this season and saw the gap to leaders Arsenal extend to four points as Mohamed Salah’s second-half strike ended Liverpool’s run of three top-flight games without a win.

As tempers frayed on the touchline, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp was sent off for his protests over an alleged foul on Salah by Bernardo Silva, while Guardiola was left furious after Phil Foden had a goal disallowed by VAR for a push by Erling Haaland on Fabinho in the build-up.

Summer signing Aguerd set for West Ham return before World Cup

17:28 , Jonathan Gorrie

David Moyes is confident that Nayef Aguerd will return to action for West Ham before the World Cup, having been sidelined since pre-season.

The centre-back, a £28million summer signing from Rennes, is yet to make his full debut for the Hammers after suffering an ankle injury in a friendly against Rangers in July.

When fit, Aguerd is a regular starter for Morocco and looks to be winning his race to return in time to represent the African nation in Qatar.

“It’s really good news that Nayef is on his way back because we bought him in as a key player for us,” Moyes said, ahead of tomorrow night’s trip to Liverpool. “He’s started training, not fully integrated yet, but is getting closer to playing.

“I think he’ll definitely feature before the World Cup.”

Diogo Jota ruled out of World Cup with ‘serious’ calf injury in huge blow to Liverpool and Portugal

17:22 , Jonathan Gorrie

Diogo Jota will miss the World Cup after suffering a calf injury in Liverpool’s win over Manchester City.

The Portuguese forward was stretchered off deep into stoppage-time at Anfield, immediately sparking fears that he may be set for a spell on the sidelines ahead of the action getting underway in Qatar next month.

That has now been made official, with Jota taking to Twitter to post an emotional message after the news was announced.

“After such a good night at Anfield mine ended in the worst way,” he posted.

“In the last minute one of my dreams collapsed I will be one more supporting from the outside, club and country, and fighting to be back as soon as possible. You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

West Ham to make late call on Kurt Zouma for Liverpool trip

17:13 , Jonathan Gorrie

Zouma has missed the Hammers’ last two games because of illness but returned to training this week and David Moyes is hopeful that the Frenchman could be fit to start tonight.

Craig Dawson remains a more significant doubt, having suffered a dead leg during last Thursday’s win over Anderlecht.

Moyes said his side had been “rocked terribly” by the pair’s absences as he was forced to shift to a back-three for Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Southampton.

Klopp charged by FA after fiery Liverpool clash with Man City

17:08 , Jonathan Gorrie

Jurgen Klopp has been charged over his behaviour during Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Manchester City on Sunday.

Klopp was sent off by referee Anthony Taylor during the closing stages of a tense game at Anfield after appearing to shout in a linesman’s face.

The German felt Liverpool should have been awarded a free-kick for a foul on Mohamed Salah by City midfielder Bernardo Silva.

After the game, Klopp admitted his dismissal was “probably deserved” and claimed “you cannot have this situation”, describing the incident as “the clearest foul I ever saw”.

A statement from the FA read: “Jurgen Klopp has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3 following the Premier League game between Liverpool FC and Manchester City FC on Sunday.

“It is alleged that the Liverpool FC manager’s behaviour during the 86th minute of this game was improper, and he has until Friday (October 21) to provide a response.”

Diogo Jota will miss out for Liverpool after being taken off on a stretcher in the dying moments against City, suffering a calf injury that has ruled him out of the World Cup.

Trent Alexander-Arnold could return to the starting XI, but the match comes too soon for Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip.. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita, Arthur Melo and Luis Diaz are all absent.
