Liverpool transfer news today: Alexander-Arnold PRIORITY, Gordon wish REVEALED, Guehi DECISION, Kubo CAN replace Salah

Here is your Liverpool FC transfer update for Wednesday July 24 with news on Trent Alexander-Arnold, Takefusa Kubo, Mohamed Salah, Odilon Kossounou and more.

Enquiry sent for Kossounou

While signing a left-sided centre-back was talk of last summer, Liverpool are now turning their attention to the other side of their defence after Joel Matip's departure on a free transfer.

If reports are to be believed, one player shortlisted to fill that void name is Bayer Leverkusen's Odilon Kossounou.

The 23-year-old, who is open to a move to the Premier League, has yet to respond to a contract extension offer from the Bundesliga champions, according to CaughtOffside.

As new Liverpool coach Arne Slot begins his tenure, the Merseyside club are yet to make any additions to their squad this summer but securing a central defender is known to be a priority — and Kossounou is a player that Liverpool have identified as a potential target.

Primarily deployed as the right-sided central defender in a back three, Kossounou can also cover the right-back position.

Huijsen demands put Liverpool off

Tuttosport reports that the Reds are interested in highly-rated 19-year-old Dean Huijsen. However, they're yet to make a move because they're put off by his current valuation.

Juventus are currently asking for €30 million (£25 million) for Huijsen, who spent 2023/24 on loan at Roma and has just 14 Serie A appearances to his name.

Premier League club Newcastle United are among the other sides interested in the youngster, with German teams Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen and Paris Saint-Germain also on the list quoted by the report.

Rooney wants Reds youngster

Wayne Rooney is lining up a move to sign Jayden Danns on loan for Plymouth Argyle with the England legend said to be a great admirer of the Liverpool prospect.

That’s according to a new report in Teamtalk, which claims Rooney is ready to pounce should Liverpool decide to loan out the 18-year-old forward this season.

Rooney, 38, is the new manager at Plymouth in his first role since being let go by Birmingham City last term.

And Danns could be part of the revolution with the goalscorer on the list for Rooney, who starred for Everton and Manchester United throughout his playing career.

Guehi fee too high

Liverpool will NOT pay the Crystal Palace asking price for centre back Marc Guehi this summer.

That’s according to a new report in Football Insider, which claims that the Eagles are seeking £70 million for the England man.

Guehi, 24, played 25 Premier League matches for Palace last season, missing a chunk of the campaign from February to April with a knee injury.

He is under contract until 2026 at Selhurst Park and Oliver Glasner’s side are reported to have set a prohibitively high price tag on the central defender this summer.

Alexander-Arnold revealed as Hughes' priority

The Athletic make it clear that Liverpool don't want to mess around when it comes to Trent Alexander-Arnold's contract. They're said to be 'desperate' to avoid a situation this season where the Scouser can leave on a free transfer.

As things stand, Alexander-Arnold could agree a free transfer in just five months' time. That would only be with clubs outside of England, of course, but Real Madrid are supposedly lining up a move.

And so Richard Hughes has made it a priority to get Alexander-Arnold signed for the long-term. Though, he's currently away on holiday, having been at the Euros, and won't be back with Liverpool for another couple of weeks.

There's still a bit of a wait, then, to see if the club can wrap-up this contract and remove a major headache.

Gordon DESPERATE for Liverpool move

It's been revealed by the Telegraph that Anthony Gordon TOLD his England teammates at Euro 2024 that a move to Liverpool was going to happen.

Furthermore, the report claims that Gordon’s representatives ‘were desperately trying to revive’ the move in the days after it fell apart.

Club sources feared that the 23-year-old’s head had been turned by the interest but now Eddie Howe - Newcastle’s manager - has revealed he has spoken to the former Everton star and is ready to welcome him back to St. James’ Park after his post-Euro 2024 holiday.

Celtic ask for club record fee in O'Riley deal

Potential suitors for Celtic midfield sensation Matt O’Riley will have to pay a club record £25 million to land the Denmark international.

That’s according to a new report in Teamtalk, which claims Atalanta remain frontrunners for the 23-year-old’s signature.

Nonetheless a report earlier in the week stated that Liverpool were being kept ‘well informed’ about O’Riley’s situation with Atletico Madrid also named as suitors.

Celtic banked around £25m for both Kieran Tierney and Jota when they were sold to Arsenal and Al-Ittihad respectively and it’s going to take a bigger offer than that to land the goalscoring midfielder.

Endo thinks Kubo will end up at Liverpool

Wataru Endo has revealed that he thinks Takefusa Kubo could join Liverpool as a long-term replacement for Mohamed Salah.

Japanese outlet Sponichi Annex reported a few days ago that negotiations between Liverpool, Kubo and his club Real Sociedad were in the final stages ahead of a potential €65 million move.

The Reds, it was reported, were prepared to pay over the €60m release clause in the winger’s contract and to make the 23-year-old the highest-earning Japanese player of all time.

The contract offer would equate to around £240,000 per week, eclipsing EVERY Liverpool player’s pay packet other than Salah.

The report was later described as ‘premature’ by the Mail’s Lewis Steele, but Reds’ midfielder Endo has endorsed his countryman for a role at Anfield as Salah’s successor.

The 31-year-old was asked which of his Japan teammates he would like to see at Liverpool by ABEMA Sports Time back in June and the answer was revealed last week.

“Maybe Kubo,” he said. "The search for a replacement for Mohamed Salah has begun, so this is becoming a real area for Liverpool to strengthen.

"I think the player who can replace him, in the national team, would be Kubo."
