Liverpool transfer news: How Reds have reacted to WORRYING Virgil van Dijk comments

Here’s how Liverpool reportedly reacted internally to Virgil van Dijk’s recent quotes on his future. The captain isn’t sure what to do.

Virgil van Dijk was ‘emotional’ last week as the Netherlands were knocked out of Euro 2024. The Dutch captain admitted he isn’t sure what his next move is - at club or international level.

"I haven't the slightest idea right now," Van Dijk said, per Reuters as relayed by the Daily Mail.

"I will think carefully this summer about what I want at club level and as an international player. Then we'll go for it again, but first recover from this.

"After a season like this, where all kinds of things have happened, it gets emotional at the end because you know it's over."

It’s particularly worrying for Liverpool as Van Dijk has under one year left on his contract. He can sign a pre-agreement with a non-English club as soon as January 1st and that would allow him to leave for nothing.

Given he remains arguably the world’s best centre-back, there will be offers this summer. Liverpool could accept one, if he doesn’t renew, to get themselves a transfer fee.

But it appears the club isn’t worrying. The Athletic claims they’re ‘relaxed about the situation’ at Liverpool after hearing their captain’s remarks.

Liverpool ‘relaxed’ about Van Dijk

As worrying as the quotes are, Liverpool will be careful not to take them too seriously. Van Dijk was in an emotional state by his own admission - they’ll expect him to be a bit more clear-minded when sitting down for talks.

So right now, fans can probably relax, too. Van Dijk won’t be around at Anfield forever, of course, but there’s little reason to believe that he’s off this summer.

That could change over the coming weeks but until there are proper signs of it, it’s just best to take things as they come.
