Virgil van Dijk has said he ‘will think carefully this summer’ about his club and international future following the Netherlands’ exit at Euro 2024.

The Netherlands were eliminated in the semi-finals of the European Championship by England on Wednesday evening, as Ollie Watkins scored a 90th-minute winner for the Three Lions in Dortmund.

Van Dijk was critical of the performance of German referee Felix Zwayer after England were awarded a controversial first-half penalty, which Harry Kane converted to cancel out Xavi Simons’ seventh-minute opener for the Dutch.

Van Dijk was questioned on his future following the loss and said he has some big decisions to make this summer.

The 33-year-old has just a year remaining on his contract at Liverpool and admitted he will have to consider all options this summer, with both the Reds and the national team.

“I will think carefully this summer about what I want at club level and as an international player,” Van Dijk said, as per Fabrizio Romano.

“Then we’ll go for it again, but first I want to recover after this difficult season.”
