Frenkie de Jong finds himself in a difficult situation at FC Barcelona, having fallen down the pecking order under Hansi Flick since returning from his long-term injury absence.

Indeed, the 27-year-old is already behind Marc Casado, Pedri, Gavi, and Dani Olmo in Flick’s order of preference while the German tactician has also used Eric Garcia ahead of the Dutchman at times from the bench.

With De Jong losing his standing within the team and his contract renewal talks going nowhere, talks of a summer exit are doing the rounds even though we are still yet to reach January.

As per reports Barça have even informed the former Ajax man that he must either sign a new deal, which will be at a lower salary, or accept being transfer-listed in the summer of 2025 as they wish to avoid losing him for free in 2026.

Liverpool interested in Frenkie de Jong

Now, according to reports in England, as relayed by AS, Premier League giants Liverpool have shown an interest in signing Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona.

As per the report, the Reds held an interest in the Netherlands international this past summer only, but his injury meant that a move never really stood any chance of happening.

Liverpool are thriving under Arne Slot and are the frontrunners to win the Premier League title this season. And it appears that the Dutch manager wishes to add more quality to his midfield unit by adding his compatriot, De Jong next summer.

Earlier today, there was even talk of the Dutch midfield heavyweight considering a move to Saudi Arabia, which his agent shot down and hinted that the player remains keen on staying at Barcelona.

For that to happen, though, the Blaugrana and De Jong must come to an agreement over his contract before the end of the season.
