Liverpool have just been handed a Premier League title boost by a former £42m transfer target.

Liverpool just watched a former transfer target play a major role in their Premier League title bid. Arsenal have drawn with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in a fantastic game of football.

City took the lead here, with Erling Haaland finishing a fine move. However, Riccardo Calafiori then hit back with a sensational finish from the edge of the box.

Arsenal then took the lead - Gabriel finishing from a corner. Before half-time, though, things took a turn as Leandro Trossard saw red for a second yellow after foolishly kicking the ball away.

That put Arsenal up against it. Yes, they had a 2-1 lead but 10 men for a full half at the Etihad? It's about as difficult as it gets.

And they nearly saw it out. City found a late equaliser through John Stones, 97 minutes on the clock. It's a result that sits Liverpool in second place, despite the loss against Nottingham Forest last weekend - one point behind City.

And they have a former transfer target to thank.

Liverpool wanted Riccardo Calafiori

Liverpool were heavily linked with Calafiori before his £42m transfer to Arsenal. We even saw him as an ideal signing for Arne Slot's new Reds - a solid centre-back who was versatile enough to play several positions and comfortable on the ball.

We saw that versatility on show here. Calafiori - known as a centre-back at Bologna - has been used almost exclusively as a left-back by Mikel Arteta and that allowed him to get forward for his goal.

And what a goal it was. Calafiori may not have ended up on Merseyside in the summer but he's still delivered a moment here that will have Liverpool fans smiling.

Yes, there's a long way to go and yes, Arsenal are title rivals - but this was undoubtedly a boost for Liverpool in the Premier League title race. Any points City drop at home is that.
