Liverpool are to demand just £8m for one of Jurgen Klopp’s favourites after a failure last season. Nat Phillips is now in the final year of his contract.

The Daily Mail reports that Liverpool will try to secure £8m for Nat Phillips this summer. It's set to be yet another transfer window full of uncertainty for the centre-back.

This comes after a disappointing season last time out. Phillips initially went out on loan at Celtic but struggled badly for minutes, so much so that things were cut short by January.

Jurgen Klopp was certainly surprised by that.

“We really think highly actually of both [Phillips and Rhys Williams], to be honest, because of the things the boys did when they were here," he said after the spell. "Now Nat, I’m not sure he would say it worked out 100 percent at Celtic."

Now, Phillips did go on to have a decent time with Cardiff City over the second half of the campaign. That first spell, however, was a failure and one that has people questioning the level he can play at.

Nat Phillips future

Phillips was considered a £15m player back in 2022. Liverpool supposedly rejected offers just short of that, such was their expectation that they could secure it.

After all, just one year earlier, Klopp had been hailing Phillips as 'incredible' for his efforts in the 2020/21 campaign.

But no one ever went that high with an offer and as Phillips enters the final year of his deal, they've dropped the price by nearly half. It's entirely possible the centre-back leaves for less than that, in fact.

It'll come down to what Liverpool want out of it, at the end of the day. If they could use Phillips at all, then holding out for the £8m is the smart move and he takes a squad place if no one pays it.

It's just difficult to see that happening. Instead, the highest offer for Phillips will likely land him - or else, the Reds lose him for nothing in a year.
