Despite heading into the market with the intention of signing a natural left-back, Manchester United bolstered their backline with the additions of centre-half Matthijs de Ligt and right-back Noussair Mazraoui.

While the latter is more than capable of deputising on the left-hand side of defence, it’s not his preferred position, and, as such, he cannot occupy the role long-term at Old Trafford.

The issue with that, however, means relying on the fitness of sidelined duo Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia; the former hasn’t played a club match since February, while the latter was ruled out of the entirety of last season and is yet to return.

During the summer, Fabrizio Romano revealed that Milos Kerkez was a name on INEOS’ shortlist, as they begin putting plans in place to find Shaw’s long-term successor – though, given his injury record, the candidate would perhaps end up playing more upon signing.

United never acted on their interest, perhaps because Bournemouth had made it clear that they’ve demanded the big bucks to sanction his exit after a stellar Premier League campaign. As such, the 20-year-old has kicked off the new term at Andona Iraola’s disposal.

Liverpool establish Kerkez interest

Now, if the Red Devils did want to ignite their pursuit when the window reopens, they’re poised to face stern competition from rivals Liverpool.

Sporting director Richard Hughes is known to be a keen admirer of the ‘explosive’ talent, having played a crucial part in bringing him to the top flight during his Cherries tenure, and is mulling over the prospect of reuniting with the 20-year-old at Anfield, per TeamTalk.
