Former Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson has admitted that he thinks it may be difficult for Trent Alexander-Arnold to turn down Real Madrid due to all the changes at Anfield.

Liverpool’s vice-captain has one year left on his current deal, which is reportedly one of the top priorities for sporting director Richard Hughes.

He was one of Jurgen Klopp’s most important players from the moment he gave him his debut and it’ll be imperative for new head coach Arne Slot that he stays so his job is made just that bit easier.

However, a change of coach is one of the reasons why Johnson, who played for Liverpool for six years, believes that his head could be turned by the prospect of a move to the Spanish capital.

UNCERTAIN TIMES FOR LIVERPOOL

With plenty of fans not sure what to expect post-Klopp, Johnson feels like that could be a thought in Alexander-Arnold’s head.

He said: “Madrid’s Madrid. Liverpool are going to be going through some uncertain times in the short-term, so if Real Madrid are at the table, it’s difficult for players to not go.

“If he goes there, he’s likely to win the Champions League again, so I don’t think he could turn that down and Madrid would be crazy to not try and sign him.”

Speaking exclusively to Betfred Johnson also gave some thoughts on the fact that Liverpool could lose Trent for nothing.

“He could even sign a pre-contract with them from January onwards, but Liverpool can’t lose him for free," he said.

"He’s way too good for that to happen and it would be ridiculous business for Liverpool to allow him to leave on a free transfer.

“I’m sure Liverpool are trying to keep him, but as the clock’s ticking and that Real Madrid are interested in him, then it’s only going against Liverpool at this moment in time.”

Trent in midfield role

Alexander-Arnold is set to join up with his club teammates later on in pre-season as he was part of the England set-up that reached the Euro 2024 final.

He started two games in midfield during that tournament so if Slot has the chance to work with him for more than just one year the subject of his position will be another priority.
