Liverpool 'agreed £75m deal' for Premier League star before transfer collapsed

Liverpool are reported to have been working towards a £75m deal for Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon until the Magpies pulled the plug.

Gordon, who spent 11 years at Everton, was part of Liverpool's academy ranks at the very start of his football journey and has been heavily linked with the Reds throughout this summer as they seek to rejuvenate the squad for new boss Arne Slot.

The 23-year-old would have boosted the left flank, where Luis Diaz has struggled to kick on from his blistering start and Darwin Nunez is a square peg in a round hole.

The Liverpool Echo has reported that a deal for Gordon worth £75m was agreed with Newcastle. That package included within it a move for Joe Gomez to St James' Park, valued at £45m of the total.

Newcastle's reason for considering letting Gordon, scorer of 11 Premier League goals last season, leave the club was down to concerns about complying with Profit & Sustainability Rules. But where Liverpool were seemingly willing to go ahead, Newcastle called things off when they found other ways to get their finances in order. It's worth noting that Elliott Anderson and Yankuba Minteh were sold for £35m each to Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion respectively at the end of June.

It means that Liverpool are still waiting to add to Jurgen Klopp's squad that finished third in the Premier League last season, seven points behind Arsenal and nine behind Manchester City.

With Liverpool willing to sell Gomez, the failed transfer also calls into question his long-term future at Anfield. He proved invaluable last season, filling in at both left-back and right-back at various points of the campaign due to Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson injuries.

RB Leipzig full-back Mohamed Simakan is one defensive option the Reds have been linked with.
