MLB playoff scores, results: Royals even series with Yankees, Tigers take Game 2 from Guardians

The Royals fended off the Yankees, and the Tigers pushed past the Guardians on Monday

After both National League Division Series were knotted up at one game apiece on Sunday, the two AL wild-card teams were looking for road wins in Game 2 on Monday in hopes of evening their series and heading back home for Game 3 with home-field advantage.

In the first game of the day, the Detroit Tigers sent AL Cy Young favorite Tarik Skubal to the hill in Cleveland against the Guardians. The 27-year-old delivered another stellar outing, with seven scoreless innings pitched. Trouble was, the Guardians' pitchers matched all of Skubal's zeros. The game was in a scoreless tie until Kerry Carpenter came through against All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase, putting up the game's only runs with a three-run homer in the ninth. The series is tied 1-1 as it heads to Detroit.

In the nightcap, the Kansas City Royals tied things up in the Bronx with a 4-2 victory over the Yankees. Salvador Perez led the way with a solo home run, and three more RBI singles were enough to notch the victory for Kansas City against a Yankees team that couldn't get anything going on offense. The Royals head home for Game 3 tied 1-1.

With a four-run fourth inning, which got started with a Salvador Perez home run, the Royals powered ahead to grab a 4-2 win over the New York Yankees in the Bronx in Game 2 of their ALDS. That tied the series 1-1 as it heads to Kansas City later this week.

After Perez's homer, which tied the game 1-1, the Royals followed with RBI singles from Tommy Pham, Garrett Hampson and Maikel Garcia, which broke the game open.

The Yankees failed to answer time and time again. Reliever Angel Zerpa got the Royals out of the fifth, despite allowing Aaron Judge to reach base, and the Yankees managed just one hit from their next seven batters.

While the Yankees added one run in the ninth on a Jazz Chisholm homer and got the tying run to the plate with two outs, their push came too late. The Royals held on to grab the two-run win, which officially tied their series 1-1. The ALDS moves to Kansas City for Game 3 on Wednesday.

Kerry Carpenter’s three-run home run in the top of the ninth inning off All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase gave the Detroit Tigers a 3-0 victory over the Cleveland Guardians in Game 2 of their ALDS.

During the season, Clase allowed only two home runs while compiling a 0.61 ERA. His performance led some to suggest he should be considered for the American League Cy Young Award.

But the Tigers have the likely winner in Tarik Skubal. The AL’s Triple Crown winner threw seven scoreless innings in this one, allowing three hits with eight strikeouts. He didn’t surrender a hit until Josh Naylor led off the fifth inning with a double.

Detroit also had difficulty scoring through eight innings and was in jeopardy of squandering Skubal’s effort. What appeared to be their best chance to score was erased by a diving catch by Steven Kwan to end the eighth.

Matthew Boyd started for Cleveland and didn't allow a run while striking out five in his 4 2/3 innings. Cade Smith, Tim Herrin and Hunter Gaddis also kept the Tigers off the board in three innings of relief.

The series moves to Detroit for Game 3 on Wednesday, scheduled for 3:08 p.m. ET.

After a Tommy Pham flyout to right, Royals manager Matt Quatraro pinch-hit MJ Melendez for Hunter Renfroe. Aaron Boone countered by bringing in left-hander reliever Tim Hill.

The move paid off, with Melendez lining out to Jon Berti at first base, who then doubled off Massey to end the inning.

  • Royals keep Yankees off the board in 5th

Angel Zerpa relieved Cole Ragans in the bottom of the fifth. He allowed a one-out walk to Aaron Judge but got out of the inning by getting Austin Wells to ground into a double play.

  • Yankees' Ian Hamilton strikes out side in 5th

The Royals couldn't add to their 4–1 lead in the fifth inning. Ian Hamilton struck out Bobby Witt Jr., Vinnie Pasquantino and Salvador Perez for a 1-2-3 frame.

Witt and Pasquantino are 0-for-3 thus far.

  • Yankees can't answer in the 4th inning

Cole Ragans walked Anthony Volpe to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning, but the Yankees couldn't add another run.

Alex Verdugo followed by grounding into a force out, then Jon Berti lined out to left field. Gleyber Torres lined out to third base to end the inning.

Ragans is now at 87 pitches. Maybe he has one inning left.

  • Royals 4, Yankees 1

Ian Hamilton took over for Carlos Rodon and allowed a single to Maikel Garcia, who drove in Garrett Hampson for a 4–1 lead. Kansas City might have extended the inning, but Hampson was tagged out at second.

Carlos Rodon gave up three runs and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings, striking out seven batters. The Royals led 3–1 when he left the game.

  • Royals add two more runs

Following Salvador Perez's game-tying homer, the Royals followed with singles from Yuli Gurriel and Tommy Pham to take a 2–1 lead.

And that will be it for Carlos Rodon as the Royals lead 3–1.

  • Salvador Perez ties it at 1–1

Royals catcher Salvador Perez leads off the fourth inning with a home run to left field. Carlos Rodon hung a slider in the middle of the strike zone, and Perez didn't miss, tying the score at 1–1.

  • Yankees take 1–0 lead

Aaron Judge lifted a ball to deep right field that Yankee Stadium fans hoped would give the home team a 2–0 lead. But the fly ball died at the warning track for a long out.

However, Giancarlo Stanton followed up with a ground ball to shortstop that Bobby Witt Jr. couldn't handle and Gleyber Torres came around from second base to score.

  • Royals threaten, but do not score

Kansas City got two consecutive one-out singles from Garrett Hampson and Mikael Garcia to pose a scoring threat in the top of the third. But Carlos Rodon got Bobby Witt Jr. to ground into a force out and Vinnie Pasquantino followed with by lining out to right field to end the inning.

Yankees are up for the bottom of the third.

  • 2nd inning: Royals 0, Yankees 0

Anthony Volpe hit a one-out single in the second inning for the Yankees, and he reached second on a stolen base. But he was stranded at first base with Cole Ragans getting Alex Verdugo to fly out and striking out Jon Berti.

Ragans has thrown 48 pitches through two innings, so it's worth asking how much longer he can go in this game.

  • Michael Massey secures the first hit of the game on a single to right field. But Yankees starter Carlos Rodon ends an otherwise clean inning with his fourth strikeout of the game. Headed to the bottom of the second tied at 0-0.

  • Cole Ragans had to work for it, but he's out of the first inning unscathed. The Royals starter walked Gleyber Torres and Juan Soto to put two runners on with no outs. • Tigers win, tie series at 1-1 in Game 2 thriller

    We have a series.

Kerry Carpenter's three-run home run off All-Star Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase broke a scoreless tie in top of the ninth inning. Tigers reliever Beau Brieske then secured the 3-0 Detroit win with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to tie the ALDS at 1-1.

The late home run by Carpenter ensured that a strong start by Cy Young favorite Tarik Skubal did not go to waste. The Tigers starter pitched seven shutout innings while allowing three hits and walking none. He recorded eight strikeouts.

Skubal won't be credited with the win, but he has now pitched 13 scoreless innings in two Detroit victories this postseason.

  • Tigers strike first in the ninth, chase All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase

After eight scoreless innings, we have runs on the board. Tigers designated hitter Kerry Carpenter came to the plate with runners on the corners and two outs against All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase in the top of the ninth.

He worked the count to 2-2, then launched a 93 mph slider over the plate into the right-field stands. The Tigers took a 3-0 lead on the three-run home run.

Matt Vierling then reached first on an error, and Clase's day was done. The best closer in baseball, who posted a 0.61 ERA in the regular season, couldn't get it done against the Tigers on Monday.

  • Tigers outfielder Parker Meadows ended the eighth with a leaping catch at the wall on a deep fly ball by pinch hitter Kyle Manzardo.

  • Tarik Skubal is done after 7 scoreless innings

Tarik Skubal's day is done after seven strong scoreless innings. Reliever Will Vest takes over in the eighth and secures a 1-2-3 inning to send the game into the ninth still in search of its first run.

Skubal's final line: Zero earned runs in seven innings with three hits allowed and no walks. He struck out eight.

  • Steven Kwan saves day for Guardians in the eighth

Steven Kwan came up with a huge catch that almost wasn't in the bottom of the eighth. The Guardians outfielder ran for a diving catch on a line drive by Wenceel Perez to shallow left-center field.

Kwan dove under it and secured the ball just as it was about to hit the turf for the third out with runners on first and second.

Had he missed it, the Tigers would have surely plated at least one run.

Officials initiated a review and determined that Kwan, indeed, made the catch. The sensational play ensured that the game would go to the bottom of the eighth still in a scoreless tie.

  • Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase takes over in 8th inning

Hunter Gaddis' day is done with two out and two on in the eighth. All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase gets the call.

He'll take over in a scoreless game after the Guardians intentionally walked Riley Greene with Matt Vierling already on second.

  • Guardians reliever Hunter Gaddis is on the mound for the eighth as the fourth Cleveland pitcher of the day.

  • Tarik Skubal returned for the seventh and is still going strong. He goes 1-2-3 on nine pitches, and we head to the eighth still in a 0-0 tie.

  • Parker Meadows hit a loud out to right field off Guardians reliever Tim Herrin on a deep fly ball that died at the warning track. Herrin then walked Jake Rogers but recorded a strikeout of Trey Sweeney to end the inning.

We remain scoreless at the seventh-inning stretch.

  • Tarik Skubal was letting the Cleveland home crowd know after getting out of the sixth-inning jam.

  • Tarik Skubal got out of a jam in the sixth, and his day may be over.

Nine-hole hitter Brayan Rocchio hit a one-out double off Skubal and reached third on a single by Steven Kwan. But Skubal induced a double-play ball off the bat of David Fry to end the inning.

We're still scoreless after six. Skubal's thrown 83 pitches and allowed just three hits with eight strikeouts.

  • Guardians reliever Cade Smith mowed through the Tigers side in the sixth. Three outs on 10 pitches, including a three-pitch strikeout of Wenceel Pérez to end the inning. Still 0-0 in the middle of the sixth.

  • The Guardians have a hit. Josh Naylor hit a laser off Tarik Skubal into centerfield for a standup double in the fifth.

Jhonkensy Noel then reached first on a hit-by-pitch off the top of his right hand. He was in obvious pain, but remained in the game.

But Skubal induced a double-play ball on his next pitch to end the inning. We're still in a scoreless tie through five.

  • The Tigers have four hits and have reached twice on walks, but they have no runs to show for it through five innings. The Guardians, meanwhile, are seeking their first baserunner against Tarik Skubal.

  • Cade Smith records the third out of the inning with a strikeout, and the game remains in a scoreless tie after the top of the fifth.

  • Matthew Boyd is done after 4 2/3 scoreless innings. He allowed four hits and two walks, but struck out five and stranded baserunners in scoring position with strikeouts in consecutive innings.

It was a gutty effort to keep the Guardians in the game as their batters remain helpless against Tarik Skubal. Cade Smith is on the mound in relief.

  • Tarik Skubal just retired the Guardians side on eight pitches in the fourth inning. Ends the inning with his seventh strikeout. He's perfect through four. He's still looking for support in a 0-0 game.

  • The Tigers threaten again in the fourth. Outfielder Wenceel Perez hits a leadoff double off Matthew Boyd and reaches third base with one out. But Boyd ends the inning with a pair of strikeouts to maintain the scoreless tie.

  • Takik Skubal's now pitched 20 consecutive scoreless innings dating back to the regular season. He shut out the Astros in six innings of work in the wild-card round.

  • Tarik Skubal is pitching quickly and with confidence. He's firing mostly fastballs that Guardians hitters can't hit. Three more strikeouts in the third to raise his tally to six.

He's dealing, and the Guardians are still looking for their first baserunner. 0-0 heading into the fourth.

  • Detroit has secured four baserunners through three innings on two walks and two hits. But so far, no run support for All-Star ace Tarik Skubal.

  • The Tigers get two baserunners in the third inning on a single and a walk but remain off the scoreboard. Guardians starter Matthew Boyd strands runners on first and second to send the game to the bottom of the third in a 0-0 tie.

  • Tarik Skubal records his third strikeout via a swinging strike 3 against Jhonkensy Noel. That's six up and six down for the Tigers starter. We're scoreless heading into the third inning.

  • Matthew Boyd allowed an infield single to Parker Meadows but otherwise pitched a clean second inning. No score heading into the bottom of the second.
