Lions pick LSU DT Mekhi Wingo in sixth round of 2024 NFL draft. What to know

The Detroit Lions selected LSU defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo with the 189th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Wingo spent two seasons with the Tigers, anchoring the defensive line and helping the team to an SEC West division title in the 2022 season. Here's everything you need to know about Wingo.

While undersized, Wingo has been able to make up for it with his agility and quick step to offset bigger offensive linemen. His motor has also been one of his bigger assets and because of his compact frame, Wingo possesses plenty of power to hold up blockers in gaps.

Wingo, who is from St. Louis and went to De Smet Jesuit (Mo.) High School, is 6-foot and 284 pounds.

Mekhi Wingo college stats

In three collegiate seasons — the first at Missouri, the last two at LSU — Wingo recorded 98 tackles, 8.5 sacks and 13 tackles for loss. He also nabbed one interception and returned for a touchdown. He played in 22 games for LSU, starting 20.

During his freshman season at Missouri, Wingo picked off a pass against North Texas and returned it 40 yards for the touchdown. As a sophomore at LSU, Wingo earned SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week honors with seven tackles, 1.5 sacks, a forced fumble and two batted balls in the 45-20 win over Ole Miss.

Wingo ran the second-fastest 40-yard dash times at the NFL Combine, clocking in at 4.85. His 40 time along with 25 bench press reps, 31.5-inch vertical and a 9.1 inch broad jump put him in the top 10 of defensive tackles that worked out in Indianapolis.
