Ligue 1 to consider revamping Trophée des Champions with Final Four format
Ligue de Football Professionnel – Ligue 1’s governing body – president Vincent Labrune is considering revamping the Trophée des Champions, Ligue 1’s equivalent of the Community Shield which sees the league champions face the Coupe de France winners or the second-placed team. On Sunday, PSG won the Trophée des Champions at the expense of AS Monaco courtesy of Ousmane Dembélé’s injury-time winner.
RMC Sport reports the Trophée des Champions has not yet found its long-term model, as shown by the uncertainty regarding the date and location of this year’s game. PSG – Monaco was previously set to be played in China last summer. Eventually, the game was held in early January at Doha’s Stadium 974.
The outlet understands a revamp is on the cards with Trophée des Champions switching to a Final Four format held abroad and during the winter, like Serie A’s Supercoppa Italiana and La Liga’s Supercopa de España.
L’Equipe adds that the three best-placed Ligue 1 teams and the Coupe de France winners would be qualified. The first edition of the revamped Trophée des Champions would be held in December 2025 or January 2026 in Africa with Ivory Coast and DR Congo having made their interest known.
