This pick is not surprising in the slightest, as the expectation was that Hedman would be given the 'C.' He has been an incredibly important part of their roster and leadership group for several years, and he is now being rewarded because of it.
Hedman has spent the entirety of his 15-year career as a member of the Lightning and signed a four-year contract extension with the Atlantic Divison club back in July. As a result, he will be sporting the 'C' on his jersey for multiple years.
In 1.052 career NHL games with the Lightning, Hedman has 156 goals, 572 assists, 728 points, and a plus-175 rating. In addition, the veteran defenseman is a six-time All-Star and won the Norris Trophy in 2017-18.
The Lightning also announced that Nikita Kucherov and Ryan McDonagh will be the club's alternate captains this season.
