When looking at potential trade targets around the NHL, Montreal Canadiens defenseman Mike Matheson could be an excellent fit for the Lightning.
With the Canadiens having an array of promising young defensemen, Matheson's name has been creating chatter in the rumor mill. In addition, the Canadiens are still building their roster for the future, so Matheson could be a player they are open to moving for the right price.
When looking at the Lightning's roster, Matheson could slot in perfectly on their top pairing with Victor Hedman if acquired. This is because Matheson can play the right side, even as a left-shot defenseman. In addition, due to his offensive skill and puck-moving ability, he would be a clear option for their power play.
Matheson, 30, has appeared in 35 games this season, where he has two goals and 18 points. This is after he had 11 goals and 62 points in 82 games with the Habs last season. With numbers like these, Matheson would significantly improve the Lightning's offense from the point if acquired.
