Lessons Learned: How Liverpool Overcame Wolves in an Ugly Yet Crucial Win
Liverpool’s Ugly Yet Beautiful Win Over Wolves: Key Lessons Learned
It’s amazing how something can be absolutely ugly and yet end so beautifully at the same time. Liverpool rocked up to Molinuex and were fortunate they were facing a team devoid of confidence and literally rock bottom of the table. It wasn’t great by any means, and it wasn’t even a good watch, but the Reds sit top of the table on Saturday night and can now shift their focus to Bologna in the Champions League on Wednesday. A win is a win, and we’ll move on quickly from this. We look at the lessons learned from a third consecutive away day victory over Wolves.
Gravenberch: The Real Shining Light for Liverpool
Easily the best midfielder on show and quite rightly Sky Sports man of the match (not that I really value Gary Neville’s opinion), Gravenberch was one of the few to come out with real pass marks in this one. Stats-wise, he won the most duels (8/8) in the game,
the most tackles (3/3) on the pitch, and was the fouled player (4) the most. The Dutch maestro ended with a 92% pass completion (57/62) on top of that. He won possession six times, and when Mac Allister, especially Szoboszlai, looked a bit lost at sea, it was the former Bayern man who steadied the ship there. Goes from strength to strength for us and a key player now zero doubt.
Konate’s Mixed Performance: Moments of Brilliance and Error
The French defender has been nothing short of sensational this season, and this performance really did have a bit of everything. It was a brilliant leap from a perfect Jota centre that gave us the lead and Konate his second of the campaign already. It was also an abysmal mix-up with Alisson that led to us gifting Wolves a way back into this one, and you wondered if it could be one of those days. A few shaky moments followed, and you could tell Ibou was rattled. However, a great block from Forbs when he was about to shoot was crucial, as was the header and foul he won at the end of the game. Let’s not let one error override everything else here. Let’s also hope we don’t see anything like that again.
Winning Ugly: A Sign of Liverpool’s Strength and Resilience
Three points is three points, and there shouldn’t be one red who’s too unhappy as we sit top of the league currently. However, the attitude was concerning, and it seemed like many thought they could simply turn up and beat this depleted Wolves. Many didn’t particularly play well, but Salah goes home the match winner, plus Van Dijk and a few others have pass marks. It’s crazy how bad Jota’s control can be at times, but that can be followed by a brilliant cross to create the first and then a clever movement to win the penalty in the second half. That being said, this won’t live long in memory at all, but winning when it’s bad is a good thing.
