Interim manager Lee Carsley has announced the England squad for their upcoming Nations League games against Greece and Finland.

After starting his tenure with 2-0 wins over the Republic of Ireland and Finland, Carsley will be keen on continuing in the same vein to give himself the best chance of being appointed permanently.

The big news from Carsley’s selection is the call-up of Tottenham Hotspur striker Dominic Solanke following his stellar form for the club.

Solanke has not earned a cap for the Three Lions in seven years but has been called up after netting three goals in his last three games for Spurs.

He takes Ivan Toney’s place in the squad. Solanke’s teammate James Maddison misses out on a call despite being in excellent form.

Defensive stalwart Harry Maguire is also not in the squad despite being a mainstay under former manager Gareth Southgate. He was selected for last month’s fixtures but has failed to make the cut this time.

His position has been taken by Chelsea defender Levi Colwill, who is in the form of his life. The 21-year-old was rated by CIES football as the top-performing under-23 centre-back worldwide.

Colwill can also deputise at left-back, where England have had issues with Ben Chilwell and Luke Shaw constantly nursing injuries.

However, there is no space in the squad for Morgan Rogers, who has enjoyed a superb start to the 2024/25 campaign, playing behind Ollie Watkins.

The attacker is set to continue with the under-21s despite playing an influential role in Villa’s impressive Champions League and Premier League performances this term.

Cole Palmer is in the squad and will be looking to play a more prominent role for the national team after being underused by Southgate.

Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo is the club’s only representative in the squad.
